3G Coverage VC vs MTN

You must remember that Telkom owns 50% of Vodacom. Therefore it is much easier for Vodacom to obtain access points. You only have to compare the VC coverage map with the MTN coverage map http://196.11.240.53/facts/documents/Coverage/CoverageWebMain.html to see how the MTN 3G/HSDPA sucks

It seems that Telkom gives preference to VC when it comes to access points, or MTN has lost the plot completely. I am seriously thinking of moving back to VC when my contract expires.

Disgruntled MTN customer.

Still sounds fishy. What I mean by right-of-way not being an issue is that if Telkom can build a link then so can Vodacom. And this is probably a new link to be put up anyway so the existing anfrastructure probably doesn't apply here. If Vodacom built the link themselves it would same them a lot in a few months time. Only problem is they would have to pass those savings on to the consumer which they don't want to do. They would rather milk a few users dry than charge a fair price that is affordable for everyone just like Telkom is currently doing. I don't think we will ever really know why Vodacom doesn't want to lay their own fiber links.

I don't think this has anything to do with Telkom. It's more a matter of how fast MTN can/want to upgrade their sites to 3G. Remember that Vodacom started about a year before MTN and that last year this time round they had about the same 3G coverage that MTN currently has.
