Wrong (80.x.x.x) DNS servers

I'm very surprised people are still using VMC Lite 2.2.2.1 though, since in that software you cannot force a 3G Only profile.

But I guess if you have good 3G coverage, you don't need to force that profile anyway.

Yes, no connection for two days really stuffs up ay work possibility.
Lucky I found an internet cafe and was able to get here to check.
You may want to try adjusting your prerecorded message off the 111 IVR as well - "Throughput Problem" isn't quite accurate if some guys are working still.

Will post details later tonight, if I can connect.
but . . . same pattern . . . E220, 80.?? DNS servers.
However - Mnandi, JHB, not Cape Town.

Funny, I seem to remember something about the 80.95.225.230 dns entry (as postd by someone above) being used some time ago by one of the Zlob family malware (dns changer).

Luckily V3g posted sometime before I came across this and started a mass panic :D

I just checked it. It works now with the 80.x.x.x DNS Servers without having to change anything.

I tried to install VCM Lite 3.2.1.156 some time ago on my E220, but found it to make the connection unstable, with frequent drops. When I checked MyBB forum, some user users recommended 2.2.2.1 as most stable. This has definitely been my experience - except for this last problem I have never had an issue before!

Vodacom3g, what can I do to make it more stable, or should I stay with 2.2.2.1?

Thanks for your input!

So that means that people who still have the 2.2.2.1 dash with this problem who just waited it out, their connection would work when they tried it now?

Yip: Pretty much.

Seems to be working fine again: all settings standard as installed.

Thank you all!

Virus?

The 80.x DNS IP points to Slovenia?
Really?

My personal suspicion is that it's a virus that embeds itself in the E220 Firmware, and spoofs DNS for banking sites.

PS You don't need the STOOPID VMC utility. You can simply use windows' built in Dial-up networking connections, once the modem is plugged in. I'm not going to help you get it set up though.

Thanks for that wonderful technical insight

You have to admit that it's a creative personal suspicion... Slightly paranoid, but definitely creative. He could be writing science fiction - oh, wait he just did.

Not so easy

Hello again.

The advice to upgrade to V3 may not be the panacea - it certainly didn't work for me. I downloaded the two files as indicated, did the firmware upgrade and dashboard upgrade, both with the sim card unplugged.

Maybe it's just the install operation on Vista Ultimate, but after that nothing worked - VMClite would not start. I tried various iterations of uninstalling, re-installing, running setup from the data card, nada.

Popped into Vodacom data center this morning and got sorted out however.
Was told that neither of those two things would have sorted me out.
Firmware upgrade was fine, but you need to remove all traces of the software, network connections etc, etc, before you install.
Preferred dashboard was setup for me: VMC 9.3.6

Perhaps the install notes on the downloads page need tweaking, or specific note added into the dashboard zip ?

Hope this helps someone else if you're also struggling.
Robin.

Yeah that was a thing i noticed too. If you upgrade the dash to version 3, and you didnt remove the previous dash, the software installs and everything. But the software would never start.

So i always make sure i remove all the other software versions before installing the new one.

WOW!! So helpful! Thanks man!!

Truth is stranger than fiction. And simpler too. Just more boring.

Really, try it! Download something like Glary Utilities or Sysinternals Autoruns, and disable all the VMC executables under system start-up - and also disable CD Rom Drive Autorun (Some USB dongles emulate a CD Drive containing VMC, so that it can automatically run when you connect the dongle). When you plug in your 3G card/dongle, just go to network connections and dial up the GPRS/3G/whatever connection that it created there. The only caveat is that you have to ad an AT command to the initialisation string if you have a PIN enabled on your smart card. Really, all this info is available on Google if you really want it, why should I tediously reiterate it here?

Also, explain to me how a DNS Server in Slovakia ends up being used by your PC on a South African ISP's connection in any legit way?

Did you know that you can open http://fnb.co.za - without it being FNB's website, if you're using compromised DNS servers? Very little stopping anyone just mirroring any website... especially ones that they would like logins for.

Plenty of mindless net users abound to provide it to them...

Well done on reviving a nine month old thread!

Maybe because Vodafone had DNS servers Slovakia?

Remember it's called Vodafone Mobile Connect, not Vodacom Mobile Connect, because it has configurations for all of Vodafone's netowrk operators all around the world.
