Sorry man,had to laugh at that......They let you upload because that way you can still reach the CAP....But they wont let you download because they dont want you getting anything substantial out of the line.....lol
What bullies!!!!!
Oneday this will all come to pass,BTW,I am still waiting to read my Gmail, been waiting since 9 pm!

re Telkom's outages being like the power failures - nope - at least when there's a power failure I have a couple of flourescent lamps charged up that switch on, as well as a few hours worth of laptop life and a UPS to run the router..

Telkom's failure gives NO alternative..

Maybe it needs a greedy lawyer or two, to sue Telkom for loss of revenue because of their network failures. (Any stock traders who can prove they lost substantial earnings because of Telkom - maybe spend a few grand to wave legal demands for damages from Telkom.) If Telkom had to deal with a flurry of lawsuits of varying sizes every time they interrupted their service (and the cash costs of attending to each one) they might learn to ensure an uninterrupted service..

hi guys

I am with webafrica and telkom ISP. Last night both were off international access. I see this morning Telkom's access seems to be up again, my Webafrica is still not on international and I dont think I have exceed the cap yet. Is there any difference between the Telkom ISP and Webafrica international peering ?

I'm with Web Africa and I'm back up this morning. Web Africa and Telkom should be the same.

Ya - this is getting irritating now, seems to be happening more and more often.
Can't get to gmail, banking at Nedbank is almost impossible - takes 5 minutes just to login.

Ok this is wierd
I can browse international sites (port 80). Any other port on international is completely blocked including ping requests. Anyone the same?

Our WoW group ALL lost ADSL comms around 22:00 last night. My router kept on telling me that my username and password were incorrect, so it seems that the authentication *somewhere* was screwed. Thing is, we're all with different ISP's. Me SAIX, another guy with MWeb. I blame Telkom by default.

At least I could send e-mail this morning...

... and so we wait ... and I still can't access Gmail (except via ssh to hetzner and lynx = horrible) ... and I still can't do my online banking ...

I'm at Olivedale too, but at at 10:00 AM this morn I was still gasping for bandwidth :P

Pretty much, my local sites are fine... but anything international has severe packet loss. I'm waiting for 2 o'clock, my home computer should send a report back to me by then.

Me Too

Yes, me too. Took 21 minutes to re-connect, with 'timeout communicating with the server'.

It's so weird, when I first got ADSL in the UK (through BT) it was directly after the trials. Must have been about five or six years ago. The price then for the 512K service was comparable to what it is now in South Africa, but there was NO cap and NO port shaping.

Then last year I came back, and to be honest, I am really glad I did. Except of course for ADSL, which was, and still is, quite a big part of my life (geek alert!). When I left about a year ago btw I had a 1Mb connection for £29 a month, still with NO cap and NO port shaping.

The reason I think that prices haven't fallen here in SA two fold. First the monopoly aspect, and hopefully the SNO (and perhaps TNO (we must at least expect a third, a fourth and a fifth will be even better)) will address that, and secondly the rapacious attitude of Telkom itself.

I have never come across a company that is so bent on milking it's clients. I mean a profit of R6bn is obscene in a world where the telecommunications industry is actually struggling, and what is worse, that it [Telkom's rapaciousness] is happening in a country where social upliftment and economic empowerment is the order of the day.

All I can say is SHAME on you Telkom! I look forward to the day when you are no longer the major operator in this country, and if I can, I will help to make that happen!

i had the same crap happening to me last night. couldn't sign in because of a 691 error: incorrect user name or password. ISP says they been having authentication problems because there was a fault on telkom's side. telkom says there's no fault on their side. ISP says telkom are lying. telkom says they're not aware of anything as yet. eventually i gave up waiting on the line for 30 minutes each time to speak to some moron at telkom. this was in addition to non-existent international for the short while i was connected in the afternoon.

Nope, no improvement on my side. Getting 55% packet loss to my UK server :P

Am on Olivedale exchange, using @lantic DSL. Hoping for the best :P

strange...i think todayhas been my best ADSL day ever, getting speeds far greater than 192 this is starting to feel so much like iburst :(
