WTF? Domain Name Registration + DNS hosting Services

I do not understand why I need to pay R150 a year, while co.za registration is costing them R50, and I have no clue why to pay for "DNS hosting" ??

What is DNS hosting? Are they carrying any traffic? And if so, is that worth the extra R50 they want?

Well it takes time to create and remove the DNS records, so feel free to use a free DNS service if the R50 sets you back too far. Its a fair charge imho. Yes, it does use traffic (though very little).
 
Basically, you are paying R100 for labour and the extra hassle of trying to get sadomain.co.za to transfer your domain to another provider when you want to move.

Can you point me out to a good (local?) free DNS service? Is it not in all (internet)community's best interest to have name servers going all over?

Just tell me if I am asking stupid stuff - I just want to understand how this all works - I do not mind paying ISPs (which I already did) for all kinds of services, but I'd like to understand what my couple of hundred bucks bought me?

Am I unreasonable?

Well, seeing as it's a co.za domain, and having heard how much of a shlep it can be to re-register/move a za domain (google it), I would seriously consider leaving that to those willing to do it.

My 2c. Advice is free - you get what you pay for. ;)

There are no local free DNS services. Try www.everydns.net for a free international DNS service. The prices you were quoted looked fairly fair. Either get the free dns service, find an ISP that offers it for free with your hosting or something like that, but R50 for DNS (and what was that.. a yearly charge?) seems pretty reasonable.

Raithlin is right.. DNS and Uniform is a headache .. and a needless one at that. Uniforum suck so much.

You need a DNS server to point you in the right direction. All other DNS servers then "learn" where sadomain.co.za (for example) is. So it gets passed on till your DNS server responds saying which domain name resolves to which IP address.

Basically a hosting of some sort and an integral part of your domain. You don't need to have them all over but you do need a minimum of 2.

Using a free DNS service is okay, and because you're the domain owner amending the .co.za entry to point to a DNS you control should be easy. What is against T&C on the co.za registrar is if the domain owner reflects your ISP that registered the domain for you. As the domain owner should always be a natural person (ie you) so if you don't have control as the owner, you might want to take it up with them

Paying R100 for something that's once off and quick to do is a bit of an overkill IMO

Webafrica also has domain hosting at R99 a year. I am currently with them as u get domain with 3 month hosting package.

Webafrica also have a very nice control panel to manage your domain.
I dont think Texo has a control panel, but they have great support, so you can email them to change anything on your domain and it will be done within 10 minutes.

Whilst I cant comment on the cost of registering a COZA domain through another ISP, I can vouch that albeit DNS does not use alot of bandwidth (depending on how popular your domain is), there are costs associated with the setup, maintenance and operating costs of running such servers.

As always feel free to shop around, a few google searches could save you a few bob per annum.

As far as I now understand is the following:

get your static divert registered (once off) with any DNS server, and all other DNS servers will register replicate this info into their routing tables?. Is that now that DNS servers do day-and-night? Replicating routing tables?

So the free DNS entry will do the same as a paid-for DNS entry. - Plus thereafter there is no traffic or anything an ISP needs to carry, so I do not see why they need to charge a monthly/yearly fee for this? - Or am I missing something?

Please let me know if stuff works differently?

why exactly would you want your domain forwarded to a free dns server anyway? Unless u want the domain for email only and are using something like google apps?
