HP laptop, NX9030 seems to have just died; wont power up, doesn't reflect that mains are plugged in, basically, a brick.

Any idea's?

Test the output of the power adapter with a multimeter - it is probably screwed. If this is the case just buy another power adapter.

Is it still under warranty?

It may be the little power distribution board inside that has failed, causing the charger/battery to not be able to get the power distributed...

Any LED's / Little indicator symbols anywhere?

No longer under warranty, and not a single led lights up; and all of this just happened out of the blue, no warning signs

If you can rule out the power adaptor, your motherboard is dead. Which means you'll have to take it to I-CSS in Midrand, who will probably break three other things while replacing the board (like they did with me - blew the CPU, broke the DVD drive and hard disc. Oh, and lost half the screws), possibly make you wait 5-6 weeks and charge you R3k-4k.

One idea, many ideas. Not picking on you - fewer and fewer people seem to have any idea what an apostrophe is meant to be used for. :)

I would disassemble. If not under warranty I would open up the computer and refit everything from RAM to HDD. I would also check if the fan didn't pack up and maybe led to heat damage. Folks tend to forget that air intakes need to be cleaned regularly. Putting lappies on linen when in bed is bad news and only looks good in movies. Truth is it needs open vents like a normal pc.

Dust can be the culprit. Odds are the damage is permanent, but perhaps a good refitting could make contact where contact might have been lost due to a drop or something?

That is what I would do. Then comes the testing... and then comes the HP call... If that doesn't work then call me and I will give you a great quote on a new laptop...

:)

Oops on the grammar; can I say i meant it in the possessive sense, i.e.: the idea belonging to the best person wins a beer?

I'm hoping its the power adaptor, trying to get my hands on another one to confirm; testing with a meter told me... nothing. It didn't get a reading, but neither did a similar working one that I tested.

@Antowan: may end up doing that; i have just under a week to organise a replacement, and I'm looking for the simplest machine possible.

@killadoob: this laptop has been to hell and back, can't say anything about the brand, it has been a good little soldier.

Thanks for the help, i'll let you know the conclusion.

If worst comes to worst, and you can't do anything with it, you could always strip out the drive (stick it in an external usb enclosure thingy) and your ram modules could be re-used as well...

Also, chances are it may have a mini-pci wireless adapter inside (which us wuggers consider very valuable) and there are adapters which you can purchase to use the optical drive in a normal pc too!

Lastly, you may even be able to do something with the screen too!

So what's the going rate on one of these? I have two: one Broadcom bcm4318 (Airforce One 54b/g) and one Atheros some or other - pulled it from a dead dual band 108mbit/s AP, tested in a Dell laptop, works like a dream.

This enclosure and this face panel works a treat too...

I'm looking for some way to make the most of my old laptop's screen. It's an HP nx6125 (mobo died for the fourth time). The screen is apparently a Philips, 1400x1050 - really nice.

Try and remove the battery pack and power lead. Then press and hold the power button for about 30 seconds. Re-insert the battery pack and power lead, then try and power up.

This worked on an HP laptop I had previously, after it seemingly died totally. Not sure what it does, but it worked for me.

Looks like the little laptop that tried has gone to a better place; thanks for all the suggestions though; the only way me to follow up for me now is a stupid question:

If i take the old hard drive, and drop it into a new machine (as compared to using it as an external drive), will it basically take me to my "old computer" i.e.: setup etc ?

Yes it will, but only if your windows happens to have the right driver for the IDE/SATA controller so it can actually boot off the disc. You will also have to install a host of new drivers for the new notebook. And check if the new notebook use the same type of drive - IDE or SATA.
