WTF RIP laptop

To a degree yes, but with so much hardware changing you might get some nasty blue screens and windows will ask you to re-activate. Now your old machine will be using that BIOS check to make sure you are using a HP laptop, so if you change brands your OS will not let you re-activate. If it works with out blue screens you will need to get a key changer and change to a new key.

I would also check if the fan didn't pack up and maybe led to heat damage.
That's exactly what happened to my laptop. Had to replace the fan and motherboard.

Folks tend to forget that air intakes need to be cleaned regularly.
What's the best way to do this (without opening up the laptop because the warranty is still valid) ?

Looks like the little laptop that tried has gone to a better place; thanks for all the suggestions though; the only way me to follow up for me now is a stupid question:

If i take the old hard drive, and drop it into a new machine (as compared to using it as an external drive), will it basically take me to my "old computer" i.e.: setup etc ?

Buy one of those R150 external usb enclosures as suggested earlier, and then connect that drive to a system running Windows. You will be able to access your data, abd backup your important files!

Once you have all the important stuff copied over, you can format the drive, and use it as a backup drive for more important stuff! :D

You can get compressed air in a can (like a Q20 tin) and a little tubie thingie. I use that, gets out all the dust. That and get your missus to hold the vacuum to collect the loose dust. Don't touch the vacuum yourself though! That is like cryptonite to use males :D

The same happened to an old Toshiba laptop I had. If the battery is completely flat no lights will come on. I then replaced the battery and it worked till it ran out of power. So I replaced the AC adapter, problem sorted.

But is it swappable?

Yes, the usb enclosure turns it into a usb external hard drive

Just to clarify (sorry, just read my earlier post now and it's not that clear)-

If i put my old hd into a new laptop, will it be functional (and then use the new hd into an enclosure)? The old one had 4 years worth of software etc and was nicely set up for my needs. I leave the country on monday, and wont be able to access the net for all the updates etc required.

Got a lappy from Bluecollar which was DOA.

Replaced the CMOS battery, and all was well :D

My sis-in-law's laptop was overheating frequently. Stripped it, cleaned out some dust puppies that have accumulated in the fan and cooling assembly, and overheating problems went away :D

There is a 99% chance that Windows will BlueScreen during boot if you do this! (The OS on the old drive was installed based on the old notebook, and all of its hardware)

The new notebook, will contain different hardware, different technologies etc, and the "old" XP installation won't contain suitable drivers for the newer hardware so it will crash during boot!

My suggestions would be simply to make a folder on the new drive called backup, and copy the ENTIRE contents of the old (now usb) hard disk into it - so that you can "weed" out all your important stuff at your leisure!

PaddyTM, James is right - Windows will probably throw blue screens and activation **** at you (sorry I forgot, I don't use Windows). You can try but the BIOS locks HP use will probably prevent you from doing that.

A soft brush. :)

I use a broad (3 to 4cm wide) but soft paint brush. Obviously baught and used for this purpose only. I also clean my desktops inside and out with a brush...
A smaller brush can also work. I use a Hammilton brush for what it is worth...

A brush on the vents will do the trick...

Used an old toothbrush :)

But you can go to any art shop and buy a fine brush if you want :)
