good point there arf i have not looked at any more than the first sheet pulled out the emails and thats it ... the spreadsheet ill delete and the list of mail addreses as well ...

the problem i have is not that my email address is published [it does tick me] but that my personal residential address has been published putting us [wife and child] at risk ...

that list tells a lot about the entries they have a computer with internet putting you in a certain economic bracket ... as it is a new technology they probably have DVD players/hi-fi/TV's ... as they can spend money on this they probably have one [but most likely more than one] car ... there is a good chance that the home is un occupied during the day but a domestic may be present ...

it is a lot more than just a email address and some personal information they have targeted you for many other things ... the door to door salesman is the least of your concern ...

I hope so........as a lot of us believe.....It is not right to capitalise on this SENTECH "BLUNDER"
 
the purpose of that was to first and foremost warn individuals of the perils sentech placed them in ... and to encourage discussion ...

there are very few that disagree with what i did in notifying people surly the method i choose has been debated and i agree there were other more preferable options ...

no one has been intrested in discussing this further i have had positive [mostly] and negative feedback in email sent to me.what i will do is clean out the list [it is in active] and start up fresh for anyone that might be intrested.

now what is intresting is in the emails i have recived there is a great deal of anger at sentech [getting back to them] and not all of those individuals are members of forums as this [i certainaly was not until today]

i have been crucified by some on this forum and i appreciate it i hope ihave cleared things up and i hope ill be able to work together with you going forward....

i was only the messanger please stop shooting me and start shooting sentech again ...

i hope by me doing this i will be prooving that i am not out to cause harm/spam to any sentech user i had a point to prove to sentech and it is done ... case closed ... i never spilt any of this information out onto the internet at large and in many cases the mail was TLS encrypted from my box to the server.

the list has gone and is waiting for subscribers [if intrested] :)
 
Under local ECT regulations you were supposed to use an OPT-IN ... not an OPT-OUT ...

In other words DON'T add people to a list unless they EXPLICITLY asked to be added.

Making excuses for the methodology used etc is all well and good but if you simply took a generic mail;copy and pasted the addressed via bcc; and hit send --- surely this would have been quicker and easier than setting up a mailling list ?
 
I cannot believe that ST havn't been in contact with their users whose details were leaked. That is absolutely criminal. It makes their original transgression pale into insignificance by comparison.

Heaven help them if they are sued by users who suffer loss as a result of the leak. Judge to ST lawyer: "So what did you do after learning of the leak". ST lawyer" Uh ... eeerrr ...".

ST yet again chooses the head-in-the-sand route.

While I frown upon your original actions, its good to have you on board, although we do not condone your actions, the forum should always be open to new members that are willing to help better communications in this country.
Speaking from my own point of view and not the forum as a whole :
We could possibly use the actions you have taken in a positive light.
If you'r list only contains the people that have responded to your mail positively and wish to be in the loop.
In a few days, once you have a group of people that are happy to be on your list, a small mention to them of the forum as a communal meeting place for information regarding communications in South Africa, might be a good step for all those that are unawares of the situation.
I wouldn't recommend this to be done immediately, Sentech are taking some positive steps forward currently, and i don't think we should continue attacking them just yet. You also need to give these people you mailed some time to respond to you, either out of curiosity or in anger, and obviously you MUST REMOVE THOSE THAT DO NOT RESPOND, OR RESpOND IN ANGER.

I'm sure I can go back to speaking for Myadsl as a whole now: We do not want to be ssociated with Spamming tactics, or unethical behaviour as a whole, so whatever you do, act responsibly.

I spoke to Winston this morning and he said they are composing an email to the entire customer base about this and it will sent out soon (I dont know when that will be).
I told him there are a lot of upset people judging from what is written on myadsl, he asked if I think they should post the email to myadsl as well so I said its a good idea because not everybody reads their emails often. And it will be a good sign if Sentech actually comes to this forum and interact. Hey its something we would have received in email but at least they will take the effort to do something different than just read.
 
I don't know how many in this forum attended the large Internet related event which happened today - Sentech was ridiculed by one of the presenters on the information leak incident. Here are some quotes:

"Sentech would make a good MBA case study of what not to do."
"Sentech is actually a good thing - a good lesson for the new entrants in the broadband market."
"All of you in the baddie list, please move to the left of the room. If Sentech takes you out, they don't need to take out the whole room."

here is a email i recived im priniting it here name removed ...

i have been getting some mail like this and many unsubscribe requests all in all less than 50 mails mostly unsubscribe request [manual or automatic] there have been 2 messages recived objecting to reciving my mail out of 1716 messages this is a small percentage.

i fully agree adding people to a mailing list closed/open it does not matter is not in line with good netizenship and although two wrongs dont make a right i set out to raise this issue [mission accomplished] and to try force sentechs hand to come clean [a little controversy can often help] and yes those who have responded requesting more info i will be able to invite to this forum and certainaly 1 of those was a previously happy customer who never knew any issues existed.

Advertised services where no product was available.
Lied to the public, I think giving out peoples personal details is the
least of my worries. Being lied to by corporations that are state owned
and chimpanzee run are the least of my worries. A secure reliable

This is exactly why Sentech's "little human error" slip-up is so serious. Thankfully the list was only sent out to a "small percentage" of people, so lets hope nothing negative happens.

The question is; How did you get hold of the list? An ethical person would
delete the list as soon as they got hold of it, and not subscribe every
user on the list to a mailing list. I have forwarded your e-mail to the
sentech support team and to the South African Police Computer Crime
Investigation unit for further investigation.

i doubt sentech support will help since they started this thing ... and the cops are welcome to visit but prehaps they should be patroling the addresess on the list ...
