WTF?!? Who is Gregory??

only

name / company name, address, tel no / cell no and email address

absolutely nothing else. trust me, I received this as well and it only contains those 5 fields in the spreadsheet.

If a door to door dude pithces up at my place and I find out he got my address as a result of that list or anything related I will demand public castration of those responsible!!!

The will be hell to pay sentech, <b>hell to pay!</b>

hi all it is me my address is on the list so you know where to find me ... please dont come looking ...

i am not hiding anything i was just major pissed off and after not reciving an appology or notification my details were leaked i took it upon myself to do somthing.

it is not to offend anyone .. this was also only done after talking to sentech and getting the usual line.

i was not aware this forum existed but i thought id drop in

Are you Gregory? If so, welcome to the fray. Now please apologise and kill your mailing list.
Or at least remove all commercial identification.

ill appologize for the bad spelling and for crap website however i will not appologize for sending out a email to those on the list who never knew there telephone/cell numbers and addresses were distributed to who knows how many users i will not use that database for any purpose other than emailing the affected users.

speaking to another person on the list we were initialy concidering publishing the list but felt that would be far worse than notifying the users that someone may call them under false pretenses and gain access to there residence.

i demanded an appology from sentech in this regard and for them to notify the affected users this was not done so i did it for very sound reasons its bad enough they do not care about our custom but when it comes to the saftey of my family and others i will do what needs to be done.

the list is now moderated and restricted as to who can post to it i will not be using it again unless there are unforseen circumstances and as such it is deleted.

anyone intrested is welcome to contact me the web address is stamped on the mail by the virus scanning software.

It's fine to say you only wanted to warn the people on the list. Very noble etc. etc. If only you didn't go to the trouble of adding those names to a f*cking mailing list, which people have to unsubscribe from. IMHO you're right up there with Sentech.

"the list is now moderated and restricted as to who can post to it i will not be using it again unless there are unforseen circumstances and as such it is deleted."

Makes no sense to me. Does it exist or doesn't it ? Unforseen circumstances ? WTF ?

thats cool. no worries. just for now keep it quiet. Lets organise a strategy to email everyone and primarily advertise our little forum. Only because it is a useful starting point for any MyWireless user with any kind of hassle.

Publishing the list is a very bad idea. People are already quite angry.

btw. you better prove that you are who you are for your own good. We have had impostors here before. Can anyone vouch for this guy (regulars)?

Your command of the English language is frightful. Reading your ITWeb comment clearly indicates that you hope to garner custom from your actions.

I hope Sentech sue you into bankruptcy.

Shame on you ...

The mailling list is atleast run from his box from what I can tell in the headers, not some public mailling list.

Besides..I'm glad I got the mail.. How would I have known my details is floating around on the Net? I didn't receive the spreadsheet...

Thanks Greg

the only reason i used a mailing list is it allows me to quickly and without much effort get the mail out.the other reason is having the unsubscribe option people who were not intrested could unsubscribe and get deleted or for those who want to unsubscribe to feel better about it.i belive that any mail sent as a invitation as this was should have a option to decline [unsubscribe].

the list is not avaiable on the internet nor can anyone post to it infact im currently the only one able to post to it.

the file with the addresses still exists but the mailing list is not active until it needs to be and i hope it wont need to be i certainaly do not want to use it nor do i belive i will.

yes indeed the list has been run on my box on a sentech connection and not on any public list and as such the list has not been published in any way [and i wont be publising it].

my only concern is that sliping up on releaseing this information puts those whoose info it is in harms way.

before i did this i sat down and thought what if it was me on a list out there without my knowlage what would i want ... i decided i would want someone to notify me of this and so i did what i did.

i know it would stir up things [i did not realise how much here].

it is suprising that i still have not heard any comment from sentech regarding this esp after discussing it with them.

This is a very bad idea. I know I would be pissed if someone got hold of me and invited me to a forum via e-mail. Myadsl has a pretty good reputation among Joe Public because we're a community trying to make a difference, without any ulterior motives. This could really damage such a reputation.

Imagine ITWeb publishing a story where myadsl.co.za has misused a database that Sentech should not have made public to start out with. Immediately focus shifts to us and off Sentech and we may even get labeled as some sort of vigilante hacking community.

loosecannon, welcome to myadsl.

I can understand why you did what you did. If Sentech had the common decency, they would have personally contacted all their users with an apology. If your personal details are mailed to people outside the company, you deserve to know about it.

Concerning whether the Sentech users are invited to join us is up to RPM and the rest of the powers that be at myadsl.

I detest SPAMMERS, but I feel if it's done the right way it can't be classified as SPAM. We are not trying to sell anything. We don't actually gain anything. The Sentech customer is the one who gains. There must be plenty of very frustrated Sentech users out there who need to vent but don't know how to go about it. The very reason this site was created by RPM was so we could have a place to come to share experiences, find assistance and learn, amongst other things.

RPM, what do you say on this matter?

that is a posibility but i am concerned that emailing all the affected users to join a site as opposed to informing them of a problem could be borderline.

there have been a number of users who have already unsubscribed this implies that that all the others have given permission to be contacted again regarding this matter so it is a possibility.

but i still dont think it is 100% right to do that ... but then again i am so fuming with sentech the more customers that stand up to them now the better in the long term and could prevent the telkom syndrome where they to big to give a stuff ...

i have emailed greedyflyza from this site for him to email me with a mail with uniquie info in it that i can reply to with a unique string to verify my identity.

The accepted (condensed) definition of Spam is "unsolictited and in bulk" - per SpamCop and First Alert.

Also, there are online dictionary services as well as spell checkers four thoose what cant spill proper

loosecannon,
While I understand tht you may have had good intentions by sending a mass mail, the fact that you inform people that they are on a mailing list and that they need to unsubscribe in order to remove themselves from it is unforgivable. If you are in the network security game, you should know full well that the worst spammers use so called "unsubscribe" links to intentionally validate active email addresses, which they can then sell for a higher price.

If you felt that you had to take action, a courtesy mail would have ben sufficient. Something along the lines of "I recently received a user list from Sentech, thought you should know. After sending this mail, I will delete it as well as all your private information that is stored on my system."

In fact I urge you to do just that, delete the information immediately. You do realise that if any spammers etc. do get hold of this info, that you will be suspect number 1. Not good for your rep in the IT industry.

the way i have done it was deliberate i know the unsubscribe spamers well, however by giving a opt out option that is legitimate you allow the person to indicate there dissatisfaction with the email as it was done in a closed system [on a secured box and not useing a smtp gateway] your arguments been valid dont all apply.

it is also required that a opt out option be given when sending bulk mail of any nature to a US address [this i agree is nonsence] and as some of the addreses were US based i opted to follow this requirement where they need to be notified and have a option to not partake further.

and yes should anyone recive spam as a result of this and they did unsubscribe i am responsible and as i am easily found [never hid my identity or contact information] ill be in trouble.i belive the polite thing todo is full disclosure [is this not what we want from sentech] and so i made it clear exactly what was done including the ability to unsub as the mailing list software allows this yes a quick awk/sed script could have been used aswell but at the end of the day it is the same thing.

i need not have used mailing list software as i did i could have done it in other ways at the end of the day there is a list that was mailed how it was done does not change the end result.useing mailing list software was just the simpler option.

The fact of the matter is that you have my, and about 1699 others, personal details. You are not authorised by me, or anyone else, to have them. How you got them is another issue, which we will take up with Sentech. The correct thing to do is delete all copies as soon as possible.

I must agree that I ABSOLUTELY object to anyone having my personal information without my consent! Delete it! That's not only the right thing to do, but the safest thing - can you say "lawsuit"?

Luckily I didn't get an email, or there would have been HELL to pay! :)
