Hi,

Everyone hitting their 3GB cap... go to www.nocap.co.za. This service was what I was looking for all along. It's basically a SOCKS proxy server, which allows you to tunnel all popular protocols through it (even kazaa). This means NO CAP (as the name suggests) and NO traffic shaping.

The technical manager over there (Jason) is very helpful, and at this VERY moment I'm capped.. and downloading in kazaa @ 20kbps. This didn't even happen when I WASN'T capped.

This is TRULY a step in the right direction. Screw telkom.
 
At last... I'm getting what I'm paying for. Just take a look at this:

ok so this is proxy service, you pay R99 for it, right?

What happens if a lot of ppl use the proxy, that means the service goes down? That aint too good...

Yes the service does slow a bit if more people are on at once but it will still be good considering that you barely get connected internationally when capped and this offers a service that can vary between 2.56k - 25.6k depending on what is happening on the server. Both those speeds arent bad considering your only paying R99pm.
We also have included 2 package deals that if you want more speed its available. We plan to add better services as we go along as where still basically in the testing phase.

It was a snip to set-up the proxies and my capped account works a treat.

2-25Kbps unlimited dl for R99.00 is a bargain.
 
Well... what protocol do you need? It's a SOCKS proxy, so you will get better access to all the protocols supported by it. I don't understand your question fully.
 
Solar, how did you manage to get 52kb/s on Kazaa when its a 256kbps service(with user ratio). 256kbps maxes out at 32kb/s.(256/8)
Also, if lets say 50 users(its a 100:1 ratio at R99) should be using the 256kbps, that means speeds of 5.12kbps(0.64kb/s). Im trusting most of the people that buy this, are GOING to use it to their full ability. Isnt that just a little slow, or am I mistaken?

Okay, no techy here, so I'll put the question in terms I understand.

When I play an on-line game on an international server (say Nascar Racing 2003 season), on most servers it will not let me in if my ping to that server is above 400ms. I'm not sure what protocol this requires, but I was wondering if I connected via your proxy server if my pings would be reduced. Via normal ADSL it can be as high as 700-1000ms.

I tested this evening tonight via your test proxy a/c (thanks :)) and couldn't detect any improvement in on-line gaming performance via international servers. Maybe someone more knowledgeable than me knows what protocol is needed, and if it is at all possible to improve international pings via a proxy service.

I may be completely missing the boat so pardon me if my question sounds dumb. At the moment I have a special ISDN account (on top of my ADSL), to get sub 300ms international pings mainly for gaming purposes.

Not everyone is using the service for say Kazaa, but what happens the bandwidth get shared out between users. If someone is browsing the net, bandwidth is only needed for a few seconds and on top of that sites are constantly been cached so not every page needs to be retrieved every time. This allows more bandwidth to users that need it at the time.
Solar is more or less correct in saying what speeds he got as i am constantly checking bandwidth usage and at certain time when the backbone isnt busy (i suppose)i do tend to get higher than 256k at times. So i count this as bonus bandwidth and i dont complain about it.
I must just say again this service is for those who are looking for more bandwidth than what there getting at the moment, but its not an extra ADSL line at full speed. It should provice a service thats comparable to Std internet, ISDN and better, which if you work out means alot more Gigs at the end of the month and decent browsing when you need it.
We at Nocap want to provide a service that we can be proud of and we wont let the service become bogged down as we are constantly looking at ways of improving the system. This month was just the intro month for testing and sussing out the market. Next month its serious with alot in store. This service may not be for everyone, but those who do choose it, we will strive to give the best possible service available. So for everyone interested contact me and test it, if its for you great then welcome, if its not exactly what your looking for im sure there are alternatives available, which i believe is good for the market as we all need a bit of competition.

This service from Jason is a real option

This morning I used my capped account and downloaded about 40MB in just over an hour from an international site.

I continued the download (same site, different files) using an uncapped account and there was no difference.

I realise that Jason's 100:1 ratio is probably not utilised right now.

I got a steady +20KBps after midnight last night on the capped account.

You will need to configure apps such dl managers, Irc and the like.

I am hoping that Jason can configure his proxy for DCC then it will satisfy all my internet requirements.

The test phase is basically done by this friday but I still accept test accounts on people who want to join. There are a few things that will change in the next month or so, but the basic service will run.

I have sat for months hearing people complain about the cap. You pay R600 a month for a very good speed to the internet. Compare this against a dialup where you have to pay for the call as well. That is not a lot of money for good speed 24/7 connectivity. Lets face it most of the people hit their caps by downloading music and movies and we wont say what movies :-). To relieve this use one way downstream satellite which will help with not reaching the cap or buy a top up. Sure is less than anything else available here. These new services coming out are highly shared and although you get no cap, you sure dont get the good speed and half the time it doesnt work anyway.

Well the past week has been good, quite a few people responded to my challenge and the server ran well. Thanx to everyone who particpated in the system.
As from tommorrow all usernames begining with user** will be disabled, as we are now going over to a fully paid service. I know it was good getting some bandwidth for free but we are now recieving a few paid clients and we want to provide the best possible service to them.
For every one who wants to sign up there will be new accounts created that you can test out for 2 days before having to commit to the service so there is no obligation to sign up.
In the near future we will be upgrading our service substantially, so be on the look out.
To all the guys who tested the service feel free to report what the service was like (good and bad), as we want to provide an all round service.
We currently have 2 services OP1 for R99pm and OP2 for R299pm.

Most other countries do not have a cap - we need to achieve this.

We pay R680 + R240 = R920.00 - Other countries pay R200 - R300

This is what Telkom does, but R920.00 must be compared with other countries - eg. NZ where you can get a superior service for R270pm.
Comparing Telkom1 to Telkom2 is not to make a comparison.

One should never refer to what an individual downloads - this should be each person's freedom of choice - in a free country that is.

Sure, but these services only find a place where monopolies exist.
I would add that yesterday my capped account + nocap was running at the same speed as my second uncapped Telkom account !
 
Hi

Mirc can be setup to use the proxy so can alot of popular software. There is also software called socscap that can capture all socks request and forward them through the server.

Got my account yesterday, and thus far it's working great. Haven't tried to download anything internationally yet, but capped surfing is a heck of a lot faster than it was before. Nice stuff, Jason. [8D]

Happy with "NoCap" - I have used this for almost a week and found
it to be great. Meets my needs. R99 p/m.
The download speeds achieved during the day are far beter than
normally available from Telkom.
E.G. From the Apple site (fast servers) I got (5-10) kb/sec.
From a news server (2.5 - 4.6) kb / sec.
Never got this from Telkom during business hours.
Only hic-ups: SETI & Limewire won't connect but maybe that's due
to dodgy set up with proxies.
Otherwise it's "GOOD ONE JASON" keep it up !! [:D][:D][:D][:D]<b></b>
