We bought a xbox arcade console roughly a year and a half ago and it recently started having the 2 light overheating error to the point of not being usable at all. We have sent it in for repairs but they don't seem to be coming right with it.

Now my question is this. If I want to replace it, should I replace it with an Elite or just get another arcade console. The hubby and I are having an argument over this because he says if it is only going to last 2 years in the future again we might as well get the cheaper one. I was under the impression the Elite was manufactured better/differently therefor it doesn't have the same overheating issues as the arcade console?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I have the same problem. Xbox Pro, died, and repairs doesn't seem to stick, a month or two later it dies again.

In my case, i'm considering selling all my games and buying a PS3 instead.

I have two Xbox consoles and after a year or so of usage a problem always starts to arise, the first one i did not replace and the second i've replaced once and recently it has just failed me again. makes me wonder if there might be software faultage:confused:(probably is) because i take good care of it.

I suggest you you go with what diabolus says. i have a ps3 and it has never disapponted me in anyway:D

Just buy a new xbox . The new models are problem free. The elite is going for R2999 at incredible.

Ask maestro_za to take a look, the oke seems to be a wizz at fixing these things.

+1.

After 3 xbox failures sold everything and went with the new 120gb PS3, very happy :)

I've had my xbox since they first released in SA which is about 3 year ago, i think. I've not had one problem with it (touch wood). I play everyday a few hours and on some weekends right through.

So it's not all xbox's that fail.

Well as with all electronics, it certainly doesn't have a 100% failure rate. Xbox failures was at some stage 40%, so yea, there "should" be 60% xbox owners who has never had a failure. Unfortunately 40% is still scary high for any type of electronics. You also sit with the issue that "once it failed" that the odds of it failing again is sky high. A repaired Xbox <> A New Xbox .

The catch is, it will still cost you R500-R700 to repair, then you STILL don't have certainty it will even last 6 months. Repairs usually only come with a 30 days warrantee, and normally your xbox will survive past that [as in my case].

So you have the choice to take a gamble with that R650 repair , and the xbox failing 6 months later. Or just buy a new one which will most probably last you longer than 6 months, and even if it fails you usually get a 12-24 month guarantee [or is it 3 years?] , in which case you can repair it for free...

2 red light error is an overheating problem. It certainly shouldn't cost R500-R700 as that is a rip-off!

The extended warranty is only for RROD (3 red lights) and E74. Any other problem means a swap out fee.

@jhbgirl ... that place you sent the Xbox to doesn't know what they're doing plain and simple. I'll fix it at no charge just because you were messed around.

The newer consoles are built on the newer manufacturing process which will see failure rates come down dramatically. It's a decent investment but it obviously depends on your budget and needs.

Choice: Arcade or Elite. Memory unit or hard drive model. Hard drive is imperative for online usage.

How much is the swap out fee?
Mine is freezing every single time less then 5 mins into a game, I've tried all the recommended fixes but nothing works
Or would you recommend a locally done repair in my case? (console is 23 months old)

R680 excl. shipping.

By recommended fixes you mean YouTube and forum guides? Hardly standard electronic repair methods I assure you ;)

I saw somewhere about a R500 shipping fee, so that hardly makes it worthwhile :(

Nope, i mean a Durban version of yourself. You know of anyone reliable down here?

Probably ... but not ethical.

That along with warranty fraud (gut swapping and replacing the manufacturer warranty sticker) isn't something I condone

Now would you say smacking it around a bit because it pisses the s**t out of you is unethical... or just human?

It's a pity, but all these things should be covered by Microsoft. If you console ain't working you're not buying new games.

That thought has crossed my mind, it still works well as a media centre though so I've held off the temptation

I wouldn't know as I get lots of consoles (PS3, Xbox 360, PS2 and the occasional Wii) from all over the country. I guess there aren't too many reliable repair places ... period :D

There aren't any versions of myself in this country. The vast majority of repair guys are in it for a quick buck and don't invest the time and money I do in equipment and parts.

I might have mentioned before but I'm investing in new equipment next year in the region of R20k to push my success rate up (sitting at 95%). The repair technique will be a first in SA as far as I know.

Repairing a Xbox isn't just having a heat gun, washers, screws and a prayer.

You cannot cover every fault, it's not viable. That is why every console system has a standard 12 month warranty.

Microsoft's extended manufacturer warranty for 2 of the biggest out of warranty faults of the platform is a first for the industry. A pity the other manufacturers couldn't be bothered.

Not that I complain ... allows me to make a decent living :o
