Hey guys,

So where is the cheapest place to get this? On the XBOX they show 1 month for R50 but I'm sure I saw talk online about a few hundred rand for a year etc. Where does one buy this?

And are their really lots of benefits? I had it for a month, which has now expired, and can't say I can tell the difference. Except for Kinect Avatar now stating it needs XBOX Live Gold membership before you can use it. Kids want to mess around with it but not sure if it is actually worth it.

We do not chat or anything yet?

Live is primarily for multiplayer gaming. If you aren't going to use that then it isn't worth it.

Also had it for a month and have not bothered to activate my second promo voucher (got two in the box). For the R450 I would rather just buy some more games.

Actually found the XBox works better without the Gold Live as it no longer spams the dashboard with crap.

Yeah, I was not interested in renewing but this Kinect Avatar has me, and the kids, intrigued. I should have played with it while I had my one month but I did not have the Kinect yet.

To the others, thanks for the responses. I do see that Takealot has it for R299 with an extra two months free.

From what I could see, no. Oh, wait, you can watch Youtube if your on Gold and search Bing. No added value like PSN+

Ah, I played around on YouTube during my one month and have not tried since. Thought it was normal and required no membership. Not a big loss currently as I still prefer it on the PC or phone.

So I presume you cannot internet browse without Gold either?

I'm not sure why anyone would want to use a console to do any of those things IMO. Xbox Live has a huge online community, you'll almost always find people online to play whatever game you're playing. I wasn't big on online gaming before either, but once the bug bites you, it bites hard :) There's just no substitute for playing with/against other humans.

You should be able to browse using Internet Explorer without Gold.

You get a lot of stuff released earlier if on Gold and you qualify for all the discounts and specials which you can't access on Silver at all.

Month to month is always expensive, get a year subscription and forget about it.

And when you are gold you can add me as a friend "SauRoN ZA" just maybe drop me a message and tell me who you are first.

+1 they put a lot of effort into the multiplayer of games, usually more than the single player to not play multi means your denying yourself half the value of the game you just bought.

I usually have those other humans in the room with me though :)

Would online multi differ substantially from offline multi? Or am I giving my naivety away by even asking that? Ha ha. Truth is the XBOX will mainly be used by the kids with me playing a little golf, racing some cars etc when time allows.

They might want to play with their buddies though, and it's a whole lot more convenient than going to each others house. Also, the amount of players is limited in offline multi, and not all games support this mode.

And, when you're in the mood for a more competitive challenge, play against a kid isn't exactly the first port of call :D

Totally disagree! Nothing better than knowing you WILL win :)

On a slightly separate note, I have not done the research, and converting MS Points annoys me, but do games tend to work out cheaper when bought in store or via the XBOX? I suppose with the former you do get the disc too.

I don't download full games because they're too large and I need my internet for other stuff too. The only things that I download are Arcade games and DLC.

I'm on uncapped so that does not really concern me too much, more interested in the price differences.

It's not the data that bothers me, it's the bandwidth. When you're downloading an 8 gig game, even on a 2 meg line, it can take a long time because it rarely downloads at full speed. And I need to download a bunch of, uhm, linux distros as well as use my line for work and other stuff.

Plus, I'm the type who likes my game to come with a box, physical media and manual. But if you feel that the reduced price is worth it then by all means go ahead :)

Ah, you see, that there is what I was looking for an answer on :) So it is cheaper via the XBOX?
Depends on the game, but most of the time I think it is. A general rule that I use to get a rand value is 10 MS points ~ R1.

If you haven't done so already, I would suggest setting up a UK account before investing any further in this. There's wayyy more content available on the UK marketplace as opposed to the sucky SA one.

Can you do that without chipping/rooting/jailbreaking/whatever you do on these things? And when you say way more content, you mean free content?
