Hi guys and gals

Can anyone please tell me where to go to see how much data I would require for an initial disc install.

I don't mean the "hard drive" space required, I'm referring to "download data" as in u need to "download this before you can play the game".

E.g. Rise of the Tomb Raider, put disc in and required an "internet download" of 1.1Gigs

Forza 6, put disc in and required a download of 3.something Gigs of internet data

I can't find it anywhere on the Internet, all I find is the "game size", which isnt what i want. I'd like to know the "disc installation download size" BEFORE purchasing xbox one games, as I don't have unlimited data (sorry I don't know how else to word it).

Any suggestions/help will be highly appreciated.

PS I'm not a techie so I'm not sure how else to type in my Google searches. I've tried wording the search every way I can think of. I've tried the xbox and IGN websites too. But found nothing.

It will vary over time as they release updates to the games. So a TR required download data could be 1.1gb today and 1.5gb next week, IF the mandatory download includes the updates.

Thanks George, but I need to know all these things before I purchase a game. Not buy it, and see I need to download a further 6gigs of whatever before I can even start to play.

Is it like this with all xbox games?

Pretty much.

You may as well assume that any game you buy will have several gigs of updates, either at launch or thereafter. This is how gaming is now.

If your connection doesn't support large downloads, you may want to prioritise your expenditure on changing it rather than acquiring new games. You're going to struggle on PC, XB1 or PS4 otherwise.

What connection do you have? These days any capped account has uncapped midnight data.

I only buy digital, but most XB1 games have massive updates of a few gigs, so even though you buy the game on disk, you're always have to do these big updates to continue playing, unless you play offline.
e.g. there was once an update for NHL 15 of over 20gb. Wasteland 2's initial download size was just over 8gb, but had an update of about 7gb a few weeks later. Battlefield 4 regularly have updates of over 2-3gbs.

Check the games forum. If one doesn't exist,, check the developing company forum or publishers. People are usually talking about it.

Yup. This is the best way. The developer's blog should have the info needed. Or just do a Google search for "[Game Name] Xbox One Update" to see what's being discussed. Unfortunately big downloads for games is not going to go away, and is a problem across all platforms. There'll nearly always be a day 1 patch/update, and then a first major update about a month after release. Some games get a lot of updates due to additional content, like Destiny. So you'll have to factor this in for any game you purchase (single player games should have less updates/patches though, in theory).

Thank you very much everyone. It makes sense now. *sigh*

@Bryn I have 10G + 10G night surfer, the latter of which I did use for TR. But it was so crap, cos you know how it is, you're excited to play your new game, now I had to wait til midnight...as well as to do the out of the box X1 d/l. By the time I was done with all this, it was too late & I was too tired to start the game :(

(I got Forza 6 with the X1, but didn't bother d/l at that stage because it's not my kinda game, I may try it at a layer date)

When you say "this is how gaming is now"...you do mean the newer consoles ONLY right :'( ? Because I have the other older consoles. Are we gonna have to do this patchwork/update on new release games that come out on them as well? >:(

Yeah, my boss said most platforms would be moving to this download crap. However, I didnt have to d/l anything, that I'm aware of, when I bought Batman AK for PS4 last month, so maybe PS4 is still coming or gradually doing it with their games?

Sucks a$$ tho doesn't it? We pay so much for PS4 & X1 games as it is, now they have more crap to waste our moola!!

@George...yeah, um about that "playing offline" how do I do that too, if u don't mind? I can't seem to play TR (e.g.) unless I'm "logged in" online. So what I've been doing is logging online just so I can access the fecken game, then I switch off my wifi & I can still play "offline". But I haven't seen any way to play offline from from the jump. I have also Googled etc this, but found nothing really helpful.

Yeah I'm talking about the current gen platforms. It's just impossible to get by adequately without the ability to download large amounts of data. Are you on a mobile connection? 10+10GB won't go far at all for gaming. You really need an always-on DSL connection with uncapped midnight data at the minimum.

If Arkham Knight didn't require a day one update then it is the exception to the rule. Most games do, and even those that don't soon push large updates before long anyway.

If your connection isn't a hindrance, then there's no monetary cost involved with updates. The only pain is having to wait for an update to download. But I play on PC and can almost always preload the entire game prior to the release date if I buy digital.

I'm currently waiting for a Telkom FTTH installation for a new 100Mbit connection. Someone already stopped by to plan the installation, so I'm hoping it won't be much longer. That should be able to clear 43GB an hour. Pretty amped. :D

I'm on a mobile connection yes. It does alright I guess (I haven't tested the speed or anything and being un-techie, I wouldn't know what mbps is good off-hand without go ogling it - lulz!), but I'm not into online gaming. I did it a bit of online challenging on Splatoon and that was cool, but otherwise I play offline. Which is why I wanted to know about playing TR on the X1 offline.

True, using my data for huge updates is using up a resource, which isn't monetary in this instance because the mobile subscription I have is "closed". But if I were to use up all the data on, say, my vodacom package of inclusive (free) 2+2 which is an open account...out if bundle kick in and a very high bill ensues...as I've had before...which I to this day don't know how that happened, cos I only use the vodacom data in an emergency (when the 10+10 is finito) & that's just to surf, no d/l of any kind or youtube or anything ...but I digress.

Heheheheh! Yeah, I totally lost you on your very last paragraph there :p but I'm glad for you :D 43GB/h does sound amp-inducing ;)

I just cancelled the update for TR and was able to play single player offline.

The reality is you need Uncapped so you don't need to calculate **** like this.

Or at least a very high cap.

If you don't have proper internet, don't get an Xbox One or PS4...or PC for that matter.

Playing offline means disconnecting from the internet, but you are saying that TR needs to you to be connected to the internet. Are you sure that it doesn't just need you to be signed in, rather than signed in and connected to the internet. Never tried it myself, but as far as I know, there's no longer a requirement to be connected to the internet to play disc based games.

To be fair if you were on uncapped you wouldn't be "wasting moola" as you put it.

I take it you don't use things like Netflix, Hulu or Showmax?

BTW the PS3 and 360 were also like this. You would have to get a ps2 to avoid this.

Or a WiiU.

XB360 game updates were usually small.

Even that isn't worth the effort and small cost difference if you already have DSL installed.

****
The PS4 doesn't force you to update like the XO seemingly does but obviously you can't play online and might miss out on new features added.

Can one schedule updates on xbone & ps4? If possible she should just leave the console on at night so it downloads during the nightsurfer period. If not let your pc or router do the scheduling.

Ideally you need uncapped.
