Xbox One - To import or to wait...

Yep, each to their own. For those who are keen to buy the camera anyway, the X1 is a no brainer. However having used the original Kinect, I can't say that I have to have the new one because I don't play those sorts of games. The motion sensor gestures are pretty gimicky to me, and I have other ways to use Skype.

It doesn't matter which country you buy the unit from, what matters is the region you set your account to. On my current 360, even though I have my region set to UK, I still can't access some features because it Live detects my IP address as originating from outside the UK. Something you may want to investigate further.

As for the power issue, check the specs for the power supply. I know that the PS4 power supply works for 110-230V, but not sure about the X1.

I'm assuming that you don't care about warranty issues though, because you will get none in SA if you import. You'll have to deal with the vendor you purchased it from overseas, and if you need to start shipping it back and forth, it can get pricey pretty quickly.

Gaming only - the X1 is inferior, that's pretty much a fact. Then it comes down to which exclusives you want to play.

I initially had some reservations over the layout of the PS controller though, coming from a 360. However it's a huge improvement over the previous PS controllers and the amount of time needed to adjust was pretty much zero.

I have not had a console to start of with. I'm now in the market of getting one. The PS4 looks nice but I would rather want to have the Xbox One due to the Media rich environment MS has created or so the reviews are going on about that. My main goal is not games but more to the Media viewing side of it but as a bonus would like to eventually play a game or to on it.

I have read that some user has imported theirs but I have not seen a thread with them having to deal with issues apart from the Power cable issue.

please share your thoughts?

The "media rich environment" you refer to is not applicable to a South African console.

Personally I wouldn't volunteer my money to a company who couldn't be bothered to offer their product in our local market in a timely fashion.

Not to mention that it's inferior to the PS4 on a hardware specification level.

Except the XBone is 720p, while the PS4 is 1080p.

Thanks to the PS4 GPU which has 30% more shaders than the XBone.

Also the PS4 uses GDDR5, while the XBone uses DDR3.

Comes down to pretty much the same in the end. As pretty much every review shows

No. They are pretty much the same. There might be some minor differences, but who cares?

Hence, "it comes down to which exclusives you want to play" :)

It's still early so the differences might seem minor now, but they will become more evident further down the line. Launch titles have never truly shown off what a console is capable of.
 
No offence to anyone but reviews are already showing the ps4 has more graphical output.

COD Ghosts 720p upscaled to 1080p on Xone, 1080p native on ps4. Keep in mind this is a launch game that doesnt look that great. So native 1080p for both shouldnt be a problem at all. If i was going to buy an Xone this would really concern me.

How is this going to be in the future? is the gap going to widen? No amount of software tweaking will make up for the difference in hardware. Yes they are new systems and the developers will optimise them better as time goes by. This will happen for both consoles though not just the Xone.

For me the gap will always be there. I use consoles exclusively for games as i have a media pc in my tv cabinet. No brainer of a decision

Its more than just graphical prowess though.
I play 99.99% online. If I had to change from Xbox to PS I also exit the online community that I have been part of for so long. So for me - even if the PS4 has more grunt, I will stick to Xbox - unless there is a unanimous decision amongst online friends to all change direction.

The only reason the xbox became popular here was because it was cheaper than the PS3. This time around the PS4 is cheaper.

So better start getting used to dualshock 4.
 
If you are going to wait, it's going to be a long wait. We'll probably only see the Xbox One around October.

The Playstation Network has always sucked in SA too. In a big way. A lot of our XBL community are ex PS3 COD gamers and they came to XML purely because of the PSN.
I played MW2 on my PS3 and XBox360 (and PC) and hated the PS3 because of a shi!tty network. It just gathered dust so I sold it. I have another PS3 now, but only purchased because they were so cheap at Rage. My son plays on it.
PSN is now a paid service as I understand (same as XBL), so maybe things improve. But if they don't, the PS4 can cost R10 and it will still be worthless to me - except as a media device.

So it depends on needs I suppose. I ONLY play online so the network is more important that a few extra frames per MS or R1,000 saving.

Not going to go for either yet. Will sit back and watch things unfold. If the PSN is solid and stable, and a lot of my online friends go for it too, then I will grab one. Otherwise I will go XBO when I need to upgrade.

Overall experience is more important that FPS and cost IMO. Will see what happens over the next few months.

I had to make this very tough decision recently having been one of the first people in the country to have a Xbox 360 long before it officially launched and having been a massive ambassador for the console for the last 7 years being highly involved with xbox-360.co.za


Eventually decided to go PS4 purely because of Microsoft SA's complete lack of effort to even announce a launch windows (as it stands their press release saying nothing more than "2014") and my belief that they've already lost the market because of this. If they launched in Q1 they would have stood a chance...Q3 or Q4...it's dead in the water.


So I figured my 100 Xbox friends (which constantly gets chopped and changed due to the limit) would all but disappear when I made the switch.

Quite the opposite happened and my <20 friends list from the PS4 is now at almost 80 as endless people from years gone by that I actually know from the Xbox community have been adding me via Friends of Friends etc. Only a handful of people who have added me have been randoms.

The PSN network is also vastly improved compared to the shambles it was before and with the addition of party chat and such it's finally useful as a multiplayer system. I've been jamming a lot of Battlefield 4 and it's honestly been a superbly lag free and pleasurable experience.

They need to do a bit of work to making joining games and such from the dashboard a bit more simple and straight forward but that's an easy software fix I figure.


As it stands with no local support for the Xbox One I honestly wouldn't bother. And even when it launches locally eventually I suspect it's going to be a terribly lonely place, not like the Xbox 360 which was cheaper than the PS3 and therefore more accessible.


The roles have reversed and the local market is Playstation country once again.

In that case with no Xbox One local servers or any intentions of implementing them by the looks of things that alone should be a very good reason to switch to PS4 instead.

Using the Xbox 360 as a benchmark for future projection in this case is sadly not applicable.

I completely agree with you that Xbox 360 vs PS3 for Multiplayer the Xbox 360 (and Xbox Live) was the far superior option....that however has changed drastically with the Xbox One vs PS4.
