Xbox Series X / S

Finished Indiana Jones last night. Almost 100%'d it but there were some quirks where it kept forgetting progress I made and stuff I picked up already.

Definitely my GOTY for me.

Going to give RDR1 Undead Nightmare a go next. Hopefully something great hits gamepass soon.
Yep I loved Indy. My only major complaint was that it was too short! Another location or two would have really made a difference.

It's the first game where I didn't actually mind going after collectibles, because they're locked behind tombs and puzzles, and if you get all of them it gives you access to things like an alternate ending (or trade with in the case of the medicine bottles). They're not just useless things that make no difference to the game...

Well this generation has been a disappointment really. Sony releasing the same games over and over, Microsoft flopping games left and right. 2024 I barely touched my Series X
Also, there are not many games for the current gen consoles like Series X exclusives.

Unless it is going to be a massive upgrade, I doubt I will upgrade from my Series X.

Yup exactly, there's been no game that is actually like wow I need to get an Xbox. Sony has it's hardcore fans who like Neil Druckman and his regurgitations, Spider-man and God of War, but those are not enough for me to go to PS5.

Not just that, but they actually have games that you can only play on PS. MS is in any case selling their games on PS.

The only value prop for Xbox is Game Pass. Over the course of the console's life you're looking at (R200 x 84 months) + R12k for the console = R28,800. Weigh that up against R12k for a PS, how many games you're likely to get for the R16,800 difference, the quality of games and size of the library.

MS is missing a trick, they need to keep their games exclusive if they want Xbox to succeed. Or they may as well just throw in the towel and focus on GP and publishing...

Looks like they might just end up like Sega, though honestly having just Sony as the sole console provider might not be a good thing either.
I mean okay sure if you consider the Switch a console there is that :-P

The irony is MS stepped in as a competitor after Sega failed, and are heading down the same path.

Maybe they're happy to let Sony focus on hardware, while they mint it through software like they did during the IBM & DOS/Windows days. Platforms are where the money is at, and they were the first movers. Eventually someone will step in to fill the hardware void...

The funny thing is, MS already had the PC market. Them entering the console market was really odd in the first place.
Than they just seemed to lose what a console is midway through the 360 generation and completely dropped the ball with the One, though it still had some decent games. The Series X is really lacking that, even if it was supposedly the best hardware till the Pro, games didn't show it off.

Well Indy was the first truly great game. But even that's making it's way to PS eventually.

Showing off hardware is trivial these days. It's similar to their main competitor and the newer tech doesn't give you as much wow factor as the jump to HD or the subsequent one to 4k...

The jump to 4k wasn't as good as the jump to HD was really. Though honestly the jump from PS2 through to the 360 and PS3 originally wasn't that great, it was a few games that truly showed that generations greatness.
The games of the 8th and 9th generation just feel like prettier versions of games from 2013.

Disagree somewhat. The jump to 360/PS3 was pretty big. Apart from the bump in resolution, I still remember silly things like wheels on the PS2 looking like hexagons, but they were actually round on 360/PS3.

And then we started getting games like Dragon Age, Mass Effect, GTA 4, Uncharted and Assassin's Creed that blew us away - only two years after the consoles were released. Five years into this gen and there's still nothing that does that, maybe GTA6 when it's eventually released.

Part of the reason this gen sucks is also dev timelines have become ridiculous. You'll be lucky to get one major release across the entire gen. During the 360/PS3 days we got 3 ME games, 3 Dragon Ages, 3 Uncharteds, 1 TLoU and 2 GTAs. 12 years later we're still waiting for another GTA after skipping an entire gen...

Are you forgetting what games came out on the PS2, Gamecube and Xbox?

Here is Black, this game looked fantastic for PS2

Wheels were definitely round on the PS2 :-), the PS1 did have some games where the wheels weren't right

R16800 will buy me a shitload of games on Steam's Summer and winter sales. What better console (and cheaper) experience can one get with Steam and a "Steam console" (Bazzite etc.).

How much would the machine cost to play those games on Steam?

Depends on your taste. Do you like 4K raytracing top AAA or don't mind 1080p or upscaled medium settings. Or do you like AA indies with minimal requirements. Many variables. MiniPC with performance just better than a Rog Ally X will be about R8k and will play everything, maybe not at top settings. Gaming PC will cost more ofcourse.

Oh and you'll probably need a controller or two. 8Bitdo Ultimate 2c or Gamesir etc.

All the free games they give away on Epic and Prime and the huge discounts on Steam sales, ROI won't take long.

Now that I 100% Indiana Jones and my Game Pass is running out in March, I'm thinking of selling the Series S. I almost haven't touched the series S last year, because of the Rog Ally. So maybe I'll get a GPU for the 13 year old PC or a miniPC for the living room.

I cant see how they will justify next gen so early. I doubt prime will be 50% faster than the series x
