So I am going this afternoon to buy a console... Not sure yet which one to get and I thought I would let price decide, but seems XBOX live is still an issue in SA. This true?

What would you recommend?

I had an xbox for 3 years but barely used it. Sold it at the beginning of this year and got a PS3.

from what i hear, multi-platform games are better on XBOX since they're usually developed for XBOX and ported to PS3 but exclusives on PS3 are much better. I could be wrong though.

In my opinion...

If you have a pc and internet connection , get the xbox.

Look at the exclusives for each and decide which one is better for you. Demo a few games to play around a bit with both controllers, and decide which one is more comfortable for you.

Also if you're into add-ons, look at the Kinect and Move and decide which one would suit you.

Dangerous topic that has been asked a lot. It comes down to personal preference. Consider the reason you want a console, if it's purely for gaming then consider the exclusives available for each console and base your decision on that. When it comes to media system, in my opinion PS3 is superior for the obvious reason that it has a Blu ray player (which doesn't matter too much if you already have a blu ray player).

oh and i find the XBOX controller to be much more comfortable and durable than the PS3 controller. Everything sways in favour of XBOX for me yet i still prefer my PS3.

edit : oh yes i Forgot, love the PS3 for the Bluray capabilities.

Until the SO wants to watch a chick-flick and you cant play.

For me , the moment you add internet and a PC , the xbox wins . They just compliment each other better than a PS3.

Xbox one time, but here is a tip, create a UK account on your PC via the Xbox.com website, seeing that the SA market place is dryer than the Khalari desert in content. And then just buy your UK XBOX MSP points by these guys www.evopoints.co.za been using them for years. Plus their prices are much beter then both CNA and Musica.

I own a PS3 as well, and I find myself playing more on the 360. Not to mention if you have a handfull friends playing the exact same game as you. It gets quite addictive.. You've been warned! :)

Keep in mind that the PS3 has issues with media files that have Cinavia DRM embedded (which is pretty much most files these days). Xbox will still play these files. But yeah if you're playing off a BR disc then it shouldn't matter.

I heard a lot of ppl complaining about their .avi rips displaying this message. Dont forget to download the optional media update to view DIVX files, otherwise just download PS3MS(playstation3mediaserver) and let your PC transcode tyour media files on the fly(mkv,rmvb,vob... ect ect ect..) to a format the Xbox will recognize (avi,mp4,wmv...)

There is more then one way to skin a cat ;)

PS3 controllers are not durable at all and they expensive. I have to buy two controllers again and thinking about forking R1500 is giving me headaches, I am thinking of going for an Xbox this time around. At least the controllers are durable and less expensive R850 for two.

ah ok, wasn't aware of this. I usually either watch BR's or *ehem* downloaded stuff *ehem* but when i'm watching from a flash/HDD i connect it directly to the TV so haven't come across this issue yet.

Huh? AFAIK there is no convenient workaround for the Cinavia problem. And it only affects the PS3, not Xbox.

The xbox and the ps3 can't read Ntfs.

For me it's the ps3.
for the Bluray player and to connect to my pc with the media server.

As far as I know
Xbox you have to buy all the add ons wireless, Hdd

Buy the cheapest ps3 with the smallest hdd.
then just buy a 500gb laptop drive and swop the drives.

Thanks guys! I have PC and Interwebz, so I will look at both this arvie and ,maybe play some games before I make up my mind. So many things to consider though... ;)

I watch movies etc through an external drive connected directly to my TV - so I don't think I will be using the box/ps3 for multimedia in any case. It will be purely for gaming - would like to take it online, depending on how big the community is. I will go shopping now and post the outcome tomorrow! :) Wish me luck!!! :D

Im not talking about the PS3 now, im talking about using the PS3 Media Server on the Xbox 360. Im well aware there is no work around with the Civania message at present just giving an alternative way of using the server to ones advantage.

-So true but why use a console to play BR movies, your just damaging your laser, sure Sony said its a media center. But I doubt you wanna pay R1700+ when the optical lens finally gives in... I would know.
-PS3MS works both on PS3 and Xbox 360.

Buy the cheapest ps3 with the smallest hdd.
then just buy a 500gb laptop drive and swop the drives

-that will sit you back at least R600. Why need all that space anyways if you arent gonna put movies on it, its not like you install your whole PS3 game on the HDD to justify the space. 250GB is enough for ANY GAMER!

As far as I know Xbox you have to buy all the add ons wireless, Hdd
-Half true, HDD and headsets are sold separate. But only with the 4GB version, wifi is built in standard now in ALL new slim versions.

Here is my advice. If you wanna game offline buy a PS3, If you wanna game offline and online get a 360.

if you're playing online, PSN is free. Not sure how much xbox live costs.

Why do you say live "is an issue in SA" OP? live is fine, the sa live marketplace is empty compared to the us/uk but otherwise everything works as it should. I think one needs both consoles ideally. Ps3 has some must play exclusives like the uncharted series and its a good media machine that you can use for your avi/mkv files. The xbox tends to be better for multiplatform titles and the live service is far superior to psn. I say get both but get the xbox first if you are looking for online multiplayer and all round versatility.
