Ok here is the deal - as an ex gamer, wanting to get back into it - have a pretty serious TV / home theatre setup and in serious need of a gaming console.

Cant decide between PS3 and XBox360.

My situation is as such, have a wife and 1 very young kid.

My wife is no gamer, however is a fitness freak, this along with the fact that my daughter (who is too young now) will in a year or so might be interested too - which leads me to think XBOX360 + kinect

Ive heard PS3 is a serious gaming console when compared to the Xbox (dont slate me here, as I am a noob with consoles) .

The answer which I hope you wont say is buy them all, the thing is I am running short of space in terms of various "appliances" in my lounge and pretty much only want one console.

I have both and I'm partial towards the Xbox only for it's menu system and controller feeling better.

However, since you have an entertainment setup, it sounds like you might enjoy the BluRay player side of the PS3, which to me is a bit of a cop-out when comparing "GAMING" consoles and then the strongest selling point has nothing to do with actual gaming. (disk space not accounted for).

Right now to me, consoles are like buying printers. You don't look at the price of the unit, but rather the price / availability / quality of the ink that you will repeatedly buy for it. (make sense?) Fortunately right now prices are pretty much on par.

So have a looksee at the sort of games you think you'll enjoy. Since the biggest split now is all about the exclusives.

Xbox has:

Gears of War 1 & 2
Mass Effect 1 & 2
Fable 2-3
Forza 3
Halo Reach
Alan Wake
and more...

PS3 has:

God of War 1-3
Little Big Planet
GTA
Heavy Rain
Uncharted 1-2
and of course...
Gran Tourismo 5
etc.

What I would DEFINITELY advise you to do is to go into Game and tell them you're serious about getting a LCD tv (pick the same/closest one to yours) and you'd like them to hook up a PS3 and Xbox to it. We did this when we bought my bro's LCD they did it for us when they realised we were serious buyers.

Then on the same TV you can see the difference (very little imho) and get a feel for the controllers.

Thanks, I have a Blueray player so it takes that one out of the equation - however I will follow your advice.

Man up and get both lol ;)

But as you said, if you had to pick. Pick PS3.

It will have all the fitness games your woman can handle next year.

I think both systems have matured to the point where you're unlikely to go wrong with either, but I'm really intrigued by the possibilities of Kinect myself. I also know my wife would rather jump around like a spaz than swing what looks like an Adultworld accessory around. :p

Oh, and there's also the small matter of just about every single multi-platform game ever released running better on the 360.

lol@adultworld_accessory - ok, now on that comment below, im hoping you have sparked a further debate, cause I know the Xbox camp vs PS3 camp can get quite twitchy abt comments like that

Thats the decider for me. I have both, the PS3 is used primarily for Blu-rays and DVD's.]

So since you already have a Blu-ray player, I would go for the Xbox hey.

nothing twitchy about it... they do.

All the PC adaptions of console games always have the 360 get up.

I dunno why it is... but some of those games just work like CRAP on my PS3. and I ain't no 360 fan!
The selling point for the PS3 was "better graphics than 360"... but whenever there is a cross platform title, it always seems there is an issue with the PS3 version.

BUT... the bespoke PS3 games are INSANELY AWESOME!

another point to mention... the PS3 has PSN! Which I've embraced lately... and I'm told that Xbox Live doesn't work so lekker in South African... I dunno details, but I think they don't recognize us as having electricity or something.

Apparently the PS3 is a much more difficult machine to work with than the Xbox, so bespoke PS3 games which are designed from the ground up with the hardware of the PS3 look amazing, while compromises have to be made for some cross-platform games and ports to work on the PS3.

Something like that, I'm sure I read that somewhere and I'm not making it up haha...

Do you see what you did there? Answered your own question. PC to XBOX, Microsoft to Microsoft. And then that is why there are exclusives, to "show" the potential of each unit. It owuld be stupid, nay, idiotic, for Microsoft to base games that look better on the opposition console. Time will tell if developers are going to program fo PS3 first and then multiplatform from there, but i don't think it will work.

ps3 is much better, and i'm saying this as an owner of both consoles. ps3 has better exclusives and more of them. the exclusives also look better because of all that extra space on the blu-ray. and ps3 has free online play whereas with xbox 360 you have to pay R599 per year. if you've got any other questions regarding the advantages of one over the other feel free to pm me.

R599 per annum @ R50 a month isn't a real issue. There are also cheaper options as subs are pretty much worldwide now. Allot of people pay that for Dstv every month (R599) lol

The exclusives are great on the PS3 but the Xbox 360 ones aren't bad either.

My first purchase was a Xbox 360 then I later got myself a used 60gb PS3. Only play the PS3 exclusives and haven't bothered much with PSN. Online it's 360 for me.

The Kinect is a great implementation for 'alternative gaming' and the numbers sales wise shows that people are literally buying into it.

@ OP ... look at the exclusives of both platforms and perhaps get a chance to play on both systems (feel of controller and menu navigation) then decide. I have a 360 & PS3 and bought them as the budget allowed. In terms of fun you not going to be sorry whichever way you go :D

thanks Tom, instead of PM, would rather keep the conversation going, cause its really good to hear both sides.

You have a serious conundrum. Your'e an ex gamer, your wife a fitness freak, your daughter is up and coming. So by your sliding scale of differences, Gaming = 1, Daughter = 2, Wife = 3. Thus i would propose, buy a PS3, as it has a lot more exclusives, and is pretty much hassle free. Free online play. And then by the time your daughter wants to play, the move will have developed a whole lot better OR you might be in a position to get her a Wii or something for herself. PS3 is releasing A "fitness" range in the future, which may interest your wife (or you). My vote is for PS3. My 2.5 year old daughter loves the Move, and even though it is a hand held control, it teaches hand eye coordination and grip for those developing muscles. Don't make the mistake of comparing it to the Wii, cause there is no comparison.

" PS3 is releasing A "fitness" range in the future," - is this fact, as per my prev posting

for your wife and daugter yes the kinect is the best option (on cost), the plus side on cost with the Kinect there is no need to spend more money on extra controllers when playing 2 or more players and trust me the cost of the controlers can add up, curretnly the playstation move is the most acurate of all the consoles with the new movement typre gaming, but you have to buy they camera , and joystick thingi and its nunchuck equvalint, and if you want a second player another joystick and nunchuck equvilent with the kinect no second device is required for more players :)

on gaming hardware corect the PS3 is the most powerful, however most games are developed first on the xbox and ported to the ps3 so on those games they actualy are better on the xbox since they dont utilize the full power of the ps3, granted ps3 exclusive tiltes are excelent on the ps3.

online gaming yes psn is free and xbox live is R50 a month but to be honest service wise you get what you pay for and xbox live is much better however the RSA service is currentyl quite lacking, and hopefully they will improve soon

As I've said before, the 360 is the perfect inbetweener between the hard core (Gears of War) and the casual (Kinect Sport/Fitness/Dance).

How is the SA online experience on PSN
