XDSL or WebAfrica?

Hi, I'm a complete noob on this. So me and a friend who lives nextdoor, plan to get one adsl package, en share it through a router. So someone told us about XDSL, but I also saw the ad from Webafrica on this site. If I'm correct, both their prices include line rental and 1 gig. Am I right here? So basicly if would cost each of us about R100 per month?

Next one:
I have a normal telkom line installed, but never used it before. Do the above mentioned sp just connect you through that line, or must they come and install something else? I know someone who can help me install the modem and stuff.

And last one:
Which one of the two sp mentioned are better?

Webafrica Is Great , They Will Always Help You And Everytime I Had A Problem It Was Sorted Same Day
 
Yes, R199 = 1gig + line.

WebAfrica is definitely a good SP, can't comment on XDSL as I have no experience with them.

Check on telkoms website if your line is ADSL capable. I think they just flip a switch or press a key on their keyboard so no install or technicians.
 
Must I know the line number(phone number) to check it on telkom? Cause I dont know the number and have never used it before.
 
Yes, you need the number but I think you can give them the erf number of your property, or even your address but I'm not 100% sure about that. Either way it means you will need to phone them, not fun.

Yes, you'll need to know the number, but the telkom rep will probably be able to tell you what it is if you phone to order the ADSL (10219?). Note that the owner of the line will have to be present to authorize the ADSL, although they can phone the owner while you're on the line with them.

The best option would be to get the ADSL self install option, buy your own modem and let your friend install it for you once the line is active. I'd recommend getting a billion router, they work quite well, preferably one with four ethernet ports, as that'll make setting up more than one user easier (which is what I presume you want to do)

Webafrica is great, but taking the all inclusive package works out slightly more expensive, so rather just get the self install option from telkom and pay them the line rental with the phone bill, and then buy your bandwidth from Webafrica. If you're not intending on using the line much, the prepaid ADSL option from Webafrica will probably be the cheapest.
 
Thanks for the info. See I dont think the line has a "owner", cause it was a prepaid telkom phone before, and when they moved out, just cancelled it. And I never bothered to activate it again. Maybe I must phone the lady who stayed here, maybe she remembers the number.
Then, I know I can google this, but what is ethernet? Please dont laugh.:D

If the line isn't active, you can't use it for ADSL. You'll have to get the line activated and transferred to your name. They don't allow you to add ADSL to any phone line, it has to be your phone line, so even getting the number from whoever won't help.

Ethernet would be the network port at the back of your PC and the network ports on the router. You basically get two types of ADSL modems, the USB kind which are typically only modems and the ethernet/LAN/network types which are routers.

I'd also recommend setting up the ADSL router in bridged mode so that each of you can purchase and use your own bandwith, that way there's no argument about who used up all the bandwidth, which is bound to happen.
 
Thanks, So if I get the number, and phone telkom, will they be able to make me the "owner" then, cause I wont use it to phone, just adsl.
 
Ok, here will be the breakdown of costs:

+-R450 for "install" of phone line
+-R450 for "install" of adsl or free on Self install option
+-R120 pm Telephone line rental ? (I don't pay for this so I am not sure of the exact number)
R199 pm for DSL rental and 1 gig internet from any ISP that offers it.

So you say that I pay line rental fee, and then th sp fee of say R200? Cause why do the sp say that the monthly fee is say R200 incl line?

Hi Jacqvt, unfortunately you need a Telkom line before you can get ADSL. The ADSL Line rental is for the ADSL portion, you will still receive a Telkom bill for the normal Telkom line.
Telkom do not allow ADSL on prepaid lines.
XDSL can have the prepaid line converted for you (on youre name), as I am sure Webafrica would too.
 
Okay I done a bit of reading and searching too, but because I'm a virgin, it took me more than 15 minutes to open this simple page, believe it or not. I saw that the rental I was thinking is the line rental, is actually the adsl line rental. Sorry guys, I msunderstood that part.

it sounds better to me, but how would I set this up. So this far I see it like this:
Phone line rental (R152) we split in two.
How do we get one adsl account, and both load our own bandwidth?
 
Set the modem in bridge mode: depends on the exact modem, but there'll be a configuration option in one of the menus.

Get your own bandwidth: you each buy bandwidth - either a monthly contract from any ISP, or prepaid from Web Africa/Axxess/poss others - this gives you a username and a password, which you set up on your own device (PC, say - both Windows and Linux support it, and very probably Mac) as a "PPPoE" connection. Then you start the connection on your own machine whenever you need it (can be on all the time).

It's just a matter of configuration. I'll try and explain it as simply as possible.

An ADSL connection is madeup of two portions, the line syncronisation and PPPoE connection. Line sync only happens once and is when the modem establishes a connection to the DSLAM (Telkom side) and the PPPoE connection is the connection to your ISP/s and can establish multiple connections (To webafrica and XDSL simultaneously for instance).

Any ADSL router can operate in one of two ways, either in routed mode or bridged mode.

In routed mode the ADSL router/modem establishes both the line sync and PPPoE connection, and all you do is to set the ADSL router as your default gateway (Which is done automatically through DHCP).

In bridged mode, all that changes is that you establish the PPPoE connection yourself from within windows, therefore you could connect to webafrica directly from your machine through the ADSL router (similar to dial-up) and your neighbor can do the same, effectively allowing each of you to use the same line but different ISP connections.

Okay I think I will understand that in a while:D. Sorry for all the questions, I cant' get any freakin website open to search myself for answers. So if I understand you all correct from the above posts, do we get one service provider, to rent the adsl line from, without any bandwidth? then we both buy our own bandwidth form wherever we want, and sign in on our own pc's with the different passwords we got from where we bought the bandwidth? All with one telkom line, and one modem with ethernet? Sorry if I'm annoying, but I'm a slow understander. Thanks in advance
 
If you're going to get the line without bandwidth, you buy it direct from Telkom. - Both the line (normal line rental) and the ADSL connectivity (384/512/4096Kbps). The rest of what you've said is right.
 
I saw the line rental is R112, I saw it here, but on telkom's site it says R152. But anyhow it is then that cost, + adsl line rental, which is also about R152, if I'm right? Thanks, I appreciate it a lot that you guys help a noob out here.:D
Ps: I just saw the closer packages from telkom. Take for instance the smallest one, I think it costs R138, does that amount include the normal telkom line rental of R124? Or will it be added? Just curious, cause you get a little bit more value for money there, if the line rental is included.

Sadly, it's both. R112 inc VAT for line rental, plus R152 inc VAT for "DSL Fast" where Fast isn't, only 384K. These costs you split between you.

Then you buy your bandwidth, e.g. around R70 for 1GB at Web Africa or Axxess; cheaper if you buy monthly.
