XDSL or WebAfrica?

Oh - plus R490 for them to install it, unless you very specifically order 'self install'. Then you come here for help on self installing!

Ps: I just saw the closer packages from telkom. Take for instance the smallest one, I think it costs R138, does that amount include the normal telkom line rental of R124? Or will it be added? Just curious, cause you get a little bit more value for money there, if the line rental is included.

Yeah....maybe a 2 year contract is not ideal for sharing...what if 1 person needs to leave asap?

If you have a router + phone line+ adsl activated (adsl rental), then you can get 1gig vouchers from PicknPay/wherever. So you wouldn't be bound by a contract....But then you need to buy the router for cash.
 
Okay now, I've done some calculations on the various options I have. I took the offer from :
XDSL, R193 for 1 gig and line + telkom rental
Compared to
Telkom line rental + adsl rental

But then with the second option you actualy pay more for one gig bandwith, not much, but I must limit costs to a minimum here.

But now I wondered, say we take the offer from xdsl, can we still use the modem then in bridged mode, and we both log into the same account, and use the same bandwidth? reason for this, is say I want to download more in one month, then I can first use up the bundled data, and the maybe create a account with axxess and buy their prepaid vouchers, log into my account with them and continue the rest of the month. Hope this will work.

Edit: I just saw the add from Nashua.... I know a lot of you dont like them, but hey even if I dont use their supplied router, and buy my own everything, thats still good? Or am I wrong here, and will it work through them with my above mentioned plans? Thanks

You'd have to check with XDSL, most telkom accounts allow you to log in four times on the same account, but that kind of defeats the object. (what's the point of logging into the same account?) You might as well set the router up in routed mode then.

If it's a case of sharing one account and using your own after that, some of the billion routers allow you to use bridged AND routed mode at the same time. I've never tested this as I don't have a need for it, but it's possible.

What add from nashua?
 
The add is about "internet lessnes", a adsl Contract for R139pm, but I just decided that I wont do that, just too many complaints I saw on this site about them. Maybe the best is the separate accounts then. Telkom lin + adsl rental, then buy the prepaid vouchers from axxess, they have a lifespan of 3 years. What I need to know about that, is I will have the adsl line from telkom then, do I just purchase a voucher from engen or pick & pay, and use that username and password provided by the voucher, or must I create an account with them (axxess), and load it onto that account? Something like THIS, say a shaped account. Then I pay the R69 once off for that account, and never again? The just load my prepaid vouchers.

I have no feeling re the router you mentioned. Any router that supports a bridge mode will do - you could pick the cheapest, or limit to reputable brands like Billion and pick the cheapest of those (don't ask me, I use a Telkom router: thoroughly disreputable). For bridging, any router will do.

The challenge you're facing is that you're trying to decide everything at once - which router, which line, which setup: shared account or separate ones, contract or prepaid, which ISP. You'll never feel like you understand it until afterwards!

I'd go for bridging and separate accounts. And Web Africa because I use them. But by the way: you must run firewall software on each of your PCs. A bridge will not do any firewalling.

Also, how are the two houses/places going to be connected? I don't think you've mentioned that yet.
 
Aha, thanks for a reply:D I spoke to the guy next door tonight, and we decided on the separate accounts way. About the firewalls, I know many dont like windows firewall, but we both will have that switched on, so I suppose we wont be able to fiddle on the other one's pc. And the modem/router will be in my place, and he will have access to it if necessary. Then he connect to it with a lan cable we run through the ceiling. We may do it, and it is possible.
 
+1 for WA. If you both use network cables, you both will be able to see the router, but like you sayd, when the windows firewall is turned on, you won't be able to access each others pcs... Unless you guys know a way around windows' firewall :)
