The attacks on foreign nationals over the last few weeks are embarrassing and inhumane, Deputy Agriculture Minister Bheki Cele has said.

"We can't behave like animals. There is no justification whatsoever for the way we are behaving," he told News24.

"As a South African, I went to exile myself. I stayed in several countries, African countries mostly during my exile days. I am embarrassed, I feel humiliated myself. I feel dehumanised even together with the people we are trying to dehumanise. It cannot be accepted," Cele said.

Cele, a former national police commissioner, said if he was still in his position he would have tried his best to intervene before things got out of hand, as he did in KwaZulu-Natal in 2008.

‘No justification’

His comments followed a spate of attacks on foreign nationals in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng. There was no justification for the attacks, he said.

"It's a question of are they taking the jobs? Even if there is genuineness (sic) in the things we complain about, which I guess somewhere there are complaints that might be genuine, but we can't respond the way we are doing."

It has been thought that Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini and President Jacob Zuma's son Edward may have played a role in starting the attacks on foreign nationals with recent public utterances they made.

Following the attacks in Durban, Zwelithini held an anti-xenophobia imbizo with traditional leaders in Durban on Monday. Asked about whether Zwelithini's address would have a positive impact, Cele said he could not say.

However, being a Zulu himself, he said the king commanded much loyalty and respect and his intervention needed to be welcomed, albeit it being a little late.

‘Right direction’

"Let's welcome and be thankful that the king acted. It could have been earlier, I agree, but let's be thankful that he did act. We don't have the results of the impact, but the fact that he spoke is taking us in the right direction."

The presidency said seven people have been killed in the last week - three South Africans and four foreign nationals. This included the murder of Mozambican national Emmanuel Sithole in Alexandra, Johannesburg, on Saturday. Pictures of him being attacked and stabbed were published on the front page of the Sunday Times.

Cele did not believe the pictures should have been published.

"That picture could have been taken and given to police without displaying it. What's wrong with that? Take the same picture, send them to police and please spare [us]. Especially things over which you have no control over who sees it."

Children had access to newspapers and Cele did not believe it was right for them to see such brutality.

"We are over graphic [images] in the name of freedom of press," he said.

Now you know how it feels to be an oppressed minority under the ANC government ..... and even though you feel this way, I bet you wont do a thing to change it. You wont challenge Msholozi in parliament, or adopt a less fortunate human being, or contribute to the charitable assistance of such people or leave the comfort of the ANC to become a peace activist.

You sir - are a hypocritical liar.

Protecting the children who are raped and murdered for muti daily? Or burying the picture to spare the embarrassment of having the brutal, racist attacks seen by the world?

why is this news? Why is the opinion of every minister on this now a separate article?

Then stop it.

And just because Cele said this doesn't mean he didn't behave exactly the same when he was in charge.

Yes it is. It is a good reflection of the ANC. We need more jobs, all the anc has created is an environment where businesses has tightened belts cut jobs and have done so for the last how many years. Industries are running at a loss. Yet nobody has the balls or know how to stop this. ( not in government )

But every year the turn head promises more jobs and every year more is cut.

This is going to blow up in the ANC's face. Hopefully not at the expense of the people actually trying to make the country work.

#paybackthemoney
Then have your sockpuppet Juilius #paybackthemoney.

Tackle corruption.
Lock up corrupt cadres. Fire incompetent workers.

Do something. All these idiots have stood upon some kind of podium blamed someone for this mess but nobody has come up with one single solution. Are the anc that worthless? Must be a bitter pill to swallow for the people predicting they will change. Now? What now?

The way he describes xenophobia is...embarrassing?

This crowd feels sweet nothing about anything 100% of the time, EXCEPT for when they're made to look like the incompetent arseholes they are in front of the world. Prime example - Mandela's memorial. They didn't like it very much when they, and especially "his excellency" Showerkop Zuma, were made to look like twats in front of an international audience that day.

When simply dealing with the peasants (ie. the SA public), they will say and do any ridiculous thing they please, day in and day out.

But yes, it is embarrassing. And so much more.

I'm not really worried about kids seeing the graphic images, it's the fake ones that the adults see which bug me.

Just maybe the goverment it partially to blame in the first place?

Foreigners not allowed to own land policy, one bullet one settler, Jan Van Riebeecks "invasion" ... just saying ...

No - but it goes along with the theme of not having to have any experience or skills to be a minister or deputy minister.

Also true. Quite depressing thinking about the crap going on lately. I need a hug or something (from a hot female).

Over 1000 foreigners have left Phoenix near Durban in this past week, gone back to wherever. Only 300 left. Quite a lot of them were Chinese as well, all gone.
