Xiaomi Mi A1 (5X)

The wait would kill me. How much would the courier option have been, as a matter of interest?
I have no idea. The phone is a replacement for my 4-year old Galaxy Note 3, which is still ticking along, but I was in no rush to get get it to justify spending another R500 on top of the price. It is a bargain phone and I want to spend as little on it as possible. I did the same with an Amazfit I ordered on 11/11. Got it for a low price on Gearbest and ordered it on standard shipping. I think it makes it easier for me to motivate the extra spend on screen protectors, cases etc.

The Gearbest is R144 with Aramex Priority Line. Takes a week or 2 to get to your door. Not a lot at all to pay. Less likely to get held at JIMC while they decide to steal it or charge you a wack of duty.

I see Gearbest and Geekbuying are now punting a price reduced Mi A1 which only has 32GB of storage: mi a1.jpg

I can't find any media release detailing this reduced storage model and GSMArena only lists the 64GB device.

Any idea's? it almost feels unofficial

It is here!
Just got my A1 yesterday and so far I am super chuffed. Black one for me and Rose Gold for the wifey and due to some weird (but nice) situation with customs I paid a full R45 at the local post office. I don't know what is going on at the mail sorting centre as my order still shows "arrival in destination country" on 17Track.

Anyway - the phone - great build quality, snappy and smooth with no issues this far.

I would love to get your real world battery feedback please. One of my Note 3 --> Mi A1 concerns would be the reduction in battery, even with the more efficient SD625

I'll update after a week or so, even with the constant fiddling with the new toy, the battery seems to be holding out much better than the Note 3

I just got my 5x which I want to turn into an A1.

It has no play store :erm:

I've applied for MiUnlock (takes a few days). I'll unlock bootloader, TWRP and flash whatever A1 ROM I see working best.

Anyone else done/doing the same?

Ja- I can't flash anything until I wait for this

Crap story. It used to be a few days ~72hrs IIRC. 2 weeks is ridiculous.

That sucks, wonder why they've done that.

Ok, some initial feedback on the Mi A1:
Battery life is great - I'm on day two (Charged 1day & 8 hours ago) and on 47% (estimated 1day & 2 hours left)
No crashes of any kind - software is running smooth and fast
Still on Nougat with no prompt for OTA update to Oreo, but some sources suggest that the (half baked) update was paused
Fingerprint sensor is quick
Phone is VERY slippery - luckily my silicone cases arrived today (duties R48 - same as 2x handsets) and I'll slip one on for better grip
At the moment I'm still smiling at this great little bargain

Hi

Anybody use this phone on Vodacom?
I have both a Vodacom sim and Telkom sim and can't get 4G on Vodacom.
I can only see Vodacom 2G and Vodacom 3g on settings with no place to find where I can enter the apn settings for Vodacom
4G works fine with Telkom and I can change settings.
I swapped the sim cards around, but it does not change anything.

With it going for $200-$220, what was/will be your total costs including "taxes"

According to specs it supports LTE band 1(2100), 3(1800), 5(850), 7(2600), 8(900), 20(800), 38(2600), 40(2300)
Which covers Vodacom as well

With the current situation at customs / post office it is a complete coin toss. I paid R48 for 2x Mi A1's on Tuesday, on Friday I paid R48 for for 4x silicone cases. I think they decide on an amount for the day and just charge that for every item handled. I ordered early November at an exchange rate of around R13.50 / $ and at $228 per handset = R6156 - so even if they only charged me 14% VAT it should have been in the region of R860.

SAPO charges R24 per packet/package.
Mostly small goods, never more than R1000. Invoice on other hand values at $10 or less.
Noticed it from my last few packages from the far east.

RED or BLACK?

Our business colour is red, so leaning towards it......

OK, so I FINALLY pulled the trigger. I took the $5.40 insurance even though I paid with PAYPAL and have their safety-net.

Total with Priority/Aramex came to $234.35 = just short of R2900 on my CCard...

Now the wait....
