Hi Guys,

I see the xiaomi South Africa FB page had a teaser implying the launch of the mi5. Does anyone have any more information about the launch data in SA and which carriers will offer the device?

Currently MTN offers the Mi4, I am waiting for it in SA too, but not sure when it will arrive, seeing the mi4 came a year and half later after its release date. Also xiaomis hugo barra said at mwc they currently going to focus on their main target markets for now, thats mainly china and india, so not sure when itll come to south africa, I hope it does come soon though.
Alternatively you could get it from the reseller https://www.ibuygou.com/p-xiaomi-mi5-qualcomm-snapdragon-820-18ghz-3gb-ram-32gb-rom-7313.html , they ship to SA for 33$,plus youve gotta add 15% sars luxury tax, thereafter 14% tax, and 7% import duties on that price if you want to import it yourself.

That price is crazy. I was planning on buying one, expecting to pay around R4500. That is way too much.

Erm, what am I missing, the phone has similar specs than the ZA S7 and costs 2/3 the price. and the Mi5 has the better soc

It's a Chinese brand with very small penetration outside of China and maybe India. At R7999 its still great value for money but when you look at the price in China which is equivalent to about $300 it doesn't add up

Exactly how is the 820 (Underclocked even...) better than the 8890??

Real hard to justify the Xiaomi Mi 5 @ R7999, when I see the Galaxy S7 @ R10200 on Takealot. Feel like they're not playing to their strengths i.e. being the much cheaper option for a still premium phone, and being 4/5s the cost is not cheap enough. Especially when you consider:

* build quality is worse with some of the thinnest metal housing available
* comes with 3GB instead of 4GB RAM
* worse camera
* normal Snapdragon 820 already struggles a bit against the Exynos, and then this 32GB Mi 5 is a further underclocked version

It's a hard sell.

I agree, but if i can get it on a good contract i'll seriously consider.

R399 on a flexi 150 from vodacom!!! I am really disappointed. Even if you compare it to last years flagships (G4, S6) it doesn't really measure up except for the new processor. Let's see what the other networks offer...

Is the 5gb, once off on that vodacom contract?

When I saw R7999 on Takealot I was very confused! Xiaomi just gave up their best thing going for them: serious bang for buck!

Price drop of at least R2-3k urgently needed or this will never sell. People will rather go Huawei P8 or P9 with better local support and included screen replacements.

Rand / Dollar

Rand dollar will affect all imported products by an average of 33%. For those companies that bought against the currency drop, will be able to save you some silver.
Have you seen the price of the Huaweii P9?

Recommended retail prices through Vodacom are as follows:
Huawei P9 Lite: R6,299
Huawei P9: R11,699
Huawei P9 Plus: R13,499

The xiaomi is good value for money.
You can thank JZ for the price increase, when he decided to play 'Which Minister is it anyway?'

It's not Xiomi someone just resells their phones it like Core and add their own markup.
