Xiaomi mi5

When I saw R7999 on Takealot I was very confused! Xiaomi just gave up their best thing going for them: serious bang for buck!

Price drop of at least R2-3k urgently needed or this will never sell. People will rather go Huawei P8 or P9 with better local support and included screen replacements.

Agreed

Doubt people will fork out R8k for what still amounts to an unknown Chinese brand. Might as well get a slightly used S6 edge or a iPhone 6 for less.

Dude was trying to push his brand new Mate 8 last week on classifieds and had to drop considerably for it to go.

Don't see it taking off here.

Got my Mi5 last week.. Anyone else having a major issues with actually receiving phone calls?

Planning on getting one at the end of the month. What's your opinion of the phone? Did you solve the call issue?

Confined issue is with the handset and MTN. You cannot receive calls while on LTE.. Got phone replaced.. Same issue

Realy frustrating.. Been In Contact with local distributors but no fix yet.

Dam, I'm keen to get one of these bastards but I saw this: Xiaomi Mi 5 Bend Test.

Who repairs Xiaomi in SA? Their SA twitter account won't reply to me, maybe it's a sign of bad service?

They replied to my mail after I sent them one I got from the MIA-Africa page, apparently their distributor is in Boksburg and you will need to send the phone to where you purchased it.

My work jeans tighten flippen PROPERLY when I get in and out of my Ranger during the day and I can hear my S5 back cover's waterproof gasket creaking big time. No ways the Xiaomi Mi5 will survive my pocket if that bend test is anything to go on.

Actually the s7 has the exynos chipset which is much faster than the 820 and also the build is much better on the s7 (check jerryrigeverything for proof). Just a tidbit.

Got my Mi5 (3Gig - 64 Gig SD820) in Hong Kong during a Gearbest flash sale for only $260 US with original flip cover.

Landed on Thursday. Got a SIM swap to get nano so was only able to really play with it today. Flashed latest Dev rom and I must say worth every cent. Body with cover is same size as my old Moto G 3rd gen that grew a tad old now.

One happy customer for sure.

Hi

Which guide did you use to flash? Receiving mine next week from them

No real Guide used. Was on official so just downloaded Official Dev ROM from http://en.miui.com/download-299.html, copied to downloaded_rom folder and in the updater app I clicked on the 3 dots top right.

It presented me with options where to update from, selected the file and said update.

Edit: My Note 4 from Gearbest China seems to be on a "fake" ROM so need to find a guide for that one. On that note found a guide on mitips for Mi5 if you suffer the same fate as my Note 4.
MI5 - http://en.miui.com/thread-299790-1-1.html
This seems to best overall info I found so far re MIUI ROMs - http://en.miui.com/thread-309122-1-1.html

From what I understand, Some devices are "locked" for Chinese market. What some web based sellers do is flash a Custom Chinese ROM to get English (Some UN-trustworthy sellers would add crap in the ROM as well) support without unlocking the boot-loader.

So you get a Chinese phone that's in English for cheap. Problem is you will struggle to get updates if any. To get updates you will need to get it to official 1st.
