Xiaomi redmi 2

So my payday falls on a Friday, and I want to have the phone by the weekend. Does anyone know of any places sell the redmi 2 pro at similar pricing to takealot?

At Game it's R1899 plus a free Mi band.

They are getting carried away with gimmicky features. They don't have any sub-5inch phones anymore.

They need a Redmi Pro Compact: Single decent camera (mi5 camera?), decent chassis (does not have to be all metal), decent chipset (SD652 level), at a decent price. Smaller than 5" AMOLED display. Done.

Can anyone confirm whether they are getting 4G connectivity on this device? According to willmyphonework.net it doesn't have the correct LTE bands for SA.

Yes it does. One of my Telkom dual simcards on 4g and other on 3g

These phones are icasa approved. See sticker on back.

Hi all
this is my very first post on here - been reading the threads for years to acquire lots of valuable info from many of you - many thanks from me!

I have a few questions regarding the Redmi 2 phones. I want to buy one, and have done a lot of research on them.
Please give me your experiences on the following issues:

1. Is OTA updates easily available for the 1GB and 2GB versions?
2. Have any of you experienced heating problems - accompanied by the battery draining?
3. Any issues with using whatsapp (or similar) ?

Ah, thanks for the quick reply!
Im watching Incredible connection to repeat their R999 special over the xmas period - gonna get one ;)

Stick to the 2GB version. 1GB version did not get the Android Lollipop update.
I recently got the MIUI 8 update, still based on Lollipop, but has the new "UI". Not sure if the 1GB version will see it.

No heating problems, or battery drainage that I can recall. Remember this is an entry/mid level chipset.

The only issue with whatsapp/messaging or apps that rely on constant connections is the MIUI Security app. It closes processes quite aggressively by default. But that's why I had a 2 day battery life. After changing the settings to allow whatsapp and other things to constantly run in the background, battery life has dropped to about 24-30 hours. Still great.

Thanks X-Gamer!

May I ask the 'where to go steps' on the interface to find the place for allowing/disallowing apps to run in the background? (for when I get my 2GB :) )

Thanks again.

Hi All

Can more of you guys confirm that you have received MIUI-8 OTA updates for your Redmi phones? And if yes; is it based on Lollipop or Marshmallow?
There seems to be conflicting info regarding the version its based on.
I'm not a big fan of Lollipop as its a battery draining version of Android.

AND!? are you still loving your Redmi after a few months of use? :p

Some info:

A week ago my Redmi-2 slipped through a hole in my jacket pocket and rolled down the stairs. Makro was kind enough to send it away for me to Mia-Africa, but the repair cost is more than I paid for the phone, R1400. Its in the recycle bin now.
They do seem to be capable with repairs if you work through the place you bought your phone from...

I enjoyed the phone; its just the camera that was'nt very good at a distance.

PS. If your looking for a Redmi-2 soft pouch in as new condition; please PM me. R80. Cape Town Tableview. ;)
