XP VS Linux?

Compliancy

I accept that GIMP wont ever be PANTONE compliant, but that doesnt justify you saying GIMP wont ever come close to Photoshop. Believe me if PANTONE wasnt asses it would have been incorporated into GIMP long time ago. But case closed, this thread isn't about GIMP and PS.

I disagree. Third-party plugins do not have to be GPL'd to work alongside GPL'd software. This enables PANTONE to make a plugin which can enables support for their product in GIMP. To those of you who will immediately argue this is a bad business decision, don't. Many people like a try-before-you-buy approach. If they can have the ability to use a format outside of having the app, and find the format highly useful (which will in many cases happen with large products, I cite Maya etc), they often find an incentive to purchase it. And to those who think I'm being duplicitous, understand this mention was an example situation. Open source software is great, albeit not all are always ready for the same type of use in a similar environment as many others, such as Photoshop used where it is. It is however for many people an option, and in time just gets better.

I have to admit that the Linux fanbois have some good arguments!

I personally like best of both as it is more convenient - MS for OS and a combination of open and closed-source for whatever tickles my fancy.

Here is the dual monitor setup in brief, I do it all the time with my dual 19 wides.

Install OS on one monitor.
Install nvidia drivers( newly available in the administration subsection in the top menu)
restart pc
For ubuntu: sudo nvidia-settings For other: su to root and then "nvidia-settings" in a terminal window.
Under x-server display-configuration, click on your unused monitor in the small monitors graphic, then click configure, then click the twin view bullet-select OK.
Then select right of or left-of or above for positioning, select apply and then save configurationand it might look a bit weird but TRUST ME AFTER RESTART, after restarting your Xserver(ctrl alt backspace) or fully restarting your pc(sudo init 6) you will have a spare monitor to the right or left-of completely at your disposal.
Now it's time for those dual wallpapers!
Time taken to achieve: 4-5 mins

vmware way is kinda pointless for this and you lose out on the benefits Gutsy offers.

Why'd you say that? For day to day use, sure. But if he wants to try out gutsy, and is comfortable using a VM, then its a pretty convenient, non-invasive way to have a look.

Yeah.

A live-CD is more restrictive (I think) than VM-Ware. I started off with VMWare to test out linux.

That Dell has IIRC 2gig ram - shouldn't have a problem with a VM, and a Live CD isn't really a fair reflection of a distro, though they can be fun. And if the other option is partioning your drive  to try out something, well - I'd go with the VM.

I have VMware-player 2.0.0-45731 [ i dont know why i downloaded it]

I will try it later today.

With VMWare Player you will need to either create a VMX file by hand or use something like:

Instructions on how to create on by hand:

Thanks ABE,

I've decided to d/l VMware Workstation and now it's currently loading Linux Kernel.

forzt i dont give a damn about your opinion considering you have 6 posts and dont seem to friendly

frozt can crysis cod4 battlefield run on linux?

i would imagine your answer is no

i dont use xp i use vista which has never crashed or given me to many hassles

dude there is no debate xp/vista can everything linux does plus play the latest games

so again i dont see the need to go over to linux unless you want to try something different

its not xp that does games it games that do xp bwhahahahahah, put the crack pipe down :)

without xp or vista htf do you think games would get played? not linux thats for sure

can linux encode multiple movies at once using a quadcore?
can linux any new games?
does linux run corel draw?

xp/vista you can do your daily chores without much effort so explain to me why linux is better and it offers that is better than xp/vista and office?

Try injecting wifi packets under xp/vista , IT DOESNT BLOODY WORK - linux > doze in terms of usability, only reason i keep windows is games.

J

If you wanna play games get linux and use the money you would have waisted on Vista and get a decent console like the xbox360.
