I'm thinking of buying an Xtreamer Pro. I already know what it can do and what it can play. I'm looking for reasons why I shouldn't buy it. What's wrong with it, what doesn't work etc.

I bought a PlayonHD a couple of months back and it was horrible, don't want to make the same mistake again. Been using a full HTPC with MediaPortal since.

Can the Xtreamer also update movie posters, info etc. from the internet? Or does it still have that horrible list view of movies?

Quite simple, the developers of the product (Unicorn) are a bunch of lying, thieving asswipes. Do some research on their earlier Media players and the non support they offered on them...

BTW there is another thread here about this.... search

Understood ... but from a personal point of view and experience, I will never support / buy a Unicorn product. They move to the next project long before they even supply what was advertised / promised on older products. This you can see buy how they completely dropped the people who purchased the mVix PVR. You can read here http://www.mpcclub.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21372

Well then
I was a proud Xtreamer owner for 4 months, then it broke
Let me tell you about few of my experiences with xtreamer
It plays everything, I never had a problem with media it could not play, the problems I have with this player is it was advertised with a Media Jukebox that’s scrapes all your files (for cover art and info), this was not the case, it does in fact have a Jukebox with scraper, but it’s a community project, which means Xtreamer does not give you any support on this whatsoever, and you have to downalod it via your Xtreamer player which bombs out 4/5 times (if you have a 384k line like me)
The Jukebox and scraper are actually so full of bugs it’s not even worth the trouble, It freezes the whole time, it detects hundreds of incorrect movies, the search function freezes, cover art just disappears, it seems like the system cache gets full and it does not clear itself, then the whole jukebox gets unusable. At the end last year it seems like they just stopped supporting it, no new firmware updates, no updates on the jukebox, nothing. And don’t dare ask anything on their forum, you will get the most rude responses from one of the moderators…., it’s a shame they lock all the “problem reporting” categories on the forum, I think if the general public could see the amount of problems the users post their, no one in their right mind will buy it.
If you want a player that can just play movies, and don’t mind the occasional freez, then the Xtreamer is okay, if you want nice coverart or anything besides just watching movies, the xtreamer is going to let you down

Thanks for the feedback. I definitely want the coverart stuff as well, since my wife will be using it as well, and she's used to everything in MediaPortal.

Looks like I'll have to look for something else then...

From what people were saying it sounds like you don't have to run the Xtreamer firmware as it is more like a small PC. XBMC is an alternative.

I have had a few freezes on the mede8er (maybe 5 in the last year or so, usually on old mp3's), have'nt tried any of the scrapers yet on it, it does pick up cover art if i manually rename a few files (just so i could check how they looked on the new 'video wall'. It's a nifty bit of kit. Great support and good firmware updates!

I was thinking of getting that playon hdpvr, looks nice! What was it about the playon you did'nt like?

Listen to what NBS says, they dropped support for mVix like a hot cake, before it had a 3rd of what was promised to make the Xtreamer, now they have done the same with the Xtreamer!! What a laughable product / manufacturer. I say drop them, go buy yourself a Zotac Mag & run XBMC on it...

Don't you have problems running 1080P content on the Zotag Mag?

I have not got one, but have not heard of those issues?? I personally run a HTPC (AMD 2.8 dual core, Asus with onboard HDMI / ATI)

+1
HTPC FTW!!!
The day someone releases a media player with the specs and functionality of a computer, at the same price, then i will consider a media player, but as things stands now, for R3000 you can build the HTPC (see my signature), you have a powerfull media player that will outlast any media player on the market today, you have limitless functionality, endless programs and support to improve any sort problem/request you might have, space between 5 – 6 SATA hard drives, between 6 -8 usb ports for even more hard drives, and if the need comes, anything in the HTPC is upgradable. Or you can buy a problem prone media player with very limited functionality
To me it was an easy option

Why do you even want a mediaplayer when you already have a HTPC ?
