It illustrates how outside research and development and innovation are the real threats to giant telecoms monopolies, who therefore have an interest in controlling all telecoms R&D. 'Incidently'(!), Telkom does exactly this in SA- they fund about 75%. Telkom never had to really control for the threats from *innovation* under the Telecoms Act cos Telecoms Act sufficiently blanketed this from happening.
I predict that at the end of my generation's lifetime, access to electronic communications will be ubiquitous and cheap. The corporations can't hold out against R&D + innovation threats forever.
