I'm in the market for a basic and cheap new car, something like a Picanto or i10, but even these are now R210k+ now. While this is what I can afford, something with increased ground clearance and more space would be nice. A Kiger or Magnite seem somewhat reasonable, but the affordable non-turbo model is dangerously slow, while I’m not sure that I would trust the longevity of the more powerful turbocharged engine.

Looking at second hand options, something like a 2010ish Jeep Wrangler can be had for around R250k+, this will obviously have far greater running costs and possibly(probably?) reliability issues.

Any recommendations for something somewhere between these two extremes that will be:
  • Cheap to run and maintain
  • Cheap to insure
  • Can tackle bad dirt roads, but not necessarily a hard core off-roader
  • More space than an i10/Picanto
  • Decent resale value
  • Safe

Old picanto/I10? or even older Tazz/Citi Golf?
or Swift/celerio older models.

plenty of choice, even a old Honda Jazz

what Id stay far away from is a Plastic fantastic BMW or Merc, although a Old stlye Merc might be good if you wanted a car for long distances.

Duster & Duster for your needs man, it ticks every box & the basic engineering is a huge Pro ito of running costs & maintenance.

Get the manual tranny, clutch is super light. The N/A petrol vs Diesel debate depends on your kilos.

If you're worried about a turbo on a 2023 Renault or Nissan i'm sorry to break it to you about the engine of a 2010 Jeep lol...

The new car will come with at least 5 years of warranty and hopefully maintenance plan - you just drive it and give it back when its broken. Nothing beats that.

That said, if you still would prefer something second hand, I would go BMW or Toyota (no character, but has the reliability factor)

Maybe a honda Jazz?

If you have R250k+ and already considering a Jeep then just get a BMW 320d f30 and call it a day. It will tick all your boxes.
Why not suggest OP get a Iphone while your at it trying to convince op to get a BMW?
