As everyone knows by now, SEACOM has again decided to stop working properly and so many people are left stranded without international - most notably those using Mweb.

What bothers me is that people blame the ISP for these faults while IMO it isn't theirs at all. They cannot help it if the cable breaks as it is not their job to maintain it. Granted, I am not very knowledgeable in how ISP, SEACOM etc. work, but I still feel that everyone is blaming the wrong company.

And no, I am not an MWeb fanboy or anything. I just want the right people to get flamed. So whose fault is this really? Who should we blame?
 
I blame Mweb.

It's the right thing to do.
 
Let's see, before seacom I never really had any problems with my ISP. Speed was perfect. I have a 3GB account. (uncapped accounts did not work out for me, not true uncapped) So, if my speed was fine while there was no seacom, why must I now suddenly suffer when seacom goes down. The ISP's have a choice whom they chose to get bandwidth from, so it's your ISP's fault for using seacom. So blame them :)
 
When your ISP decided to run a business using Seacom, it inherently became their problem even though they don't manage the cable system. In South Africa we currently have more than 1 cable system, and satellites.

It is very possible to put most of your traffic on Seacom because it is by far the cheapest for now, but then also secure failover capacity on other links including SAT3/SAFE and Satellites. Yes its not as cool or good as Seacom (when it works) however it is better than having nothing when Seacom fail. This failover should also in my opinion happen automatically, this that you have to reboot your ADSL modem after M-Web reconfigured some settings for manual failover, is well just stupid.

Of coarse, this is my opinion I don't care if you disagree.

They did have automatic failover...just not for the super cheap home uncapped accounts. Redundancy costs big bucks too since the other cable effectively has to keep those slots open.

Realistically the ISP has to make a choice between cheap prices and redundancy. MWeb went the cheap route & in doing so boosted SA internet, but at a risk.
 
My Axxess also crashed 100% wrt international.

At R69 per Gig that's not exactly cheap, would have expected a better service.
 
...so where are all the MWEB fanboys now.

this makes no sense in blaming mweb, if a road is closed that you drive on every day, do you blame the manufacturer of your car for it?

if that road is closed, find a different (temp) route, or wait till it is fixed.
 
People are pretty dumb if they blame MWEB for this.

I guess people are angry and they need someone to blame, so they take it out on the ISP`s.
 
blame yourselves for not burning down Telkom exchanges sooner to get some real redundant bandwidth into the country. But its ok. EASSY is here, and MWEB has a big chunk reserved on it.
 
Why? They are not at fault here, and they did provide an alternative within a day.

I can put up with a day down time, but they are now filtering the traffic and my trading software can not connect anymore! R2K a month for this is very poor! We may criticise Telkom as much as we want ( and I do as well) but when the **** hits the fan they are still the one providing, good thing I kept my DO3 so now I can try to earn some money to pay MWeb!
 
So it should be my problem that the access I pay MWEB for isn't available?

No, just understanding of the limitations of South African broadband is required. Holding MWEB responsible for an "act of God" though is just strange to me. I could understand the anger if it _is_ their fault, but this is not the case. In fact, AFAIK Mweb have the better redundancy for their uncapped clients (you can still kinda browse)... you should see the IS uncapped accounts, theyre almost completely dead in the water.

Someone used the analogy of blaming the car manufacturer because the road is temp down.
