Your Android backups will be deleted if your device is inactive

So to fix this they only need to enable alerts

Don't see a problem. A backup is just that, a backup. Your data is still safe on your device. If you're using your device then the backup is obviously still there if something happens.

No it wont be there:

The user moved from his Nexus 6P to an iPhone for a few months, while looking for a suitable Android replacement.

When he looked at his Google Drive Backup folder, he discovered the Android backup for his 6P was missing.

Because the thief or buyer is using the phone after it was wiped or it's on the scrapheap and inaccessible or it's in the lost and found bin or or or...

Read more books, it develops the imagination :p

Never tried online backup, but surely you can the data back without having the actual device ?

Yes, but google deletes it after a few months if you don't use your google account on an andriod device, because you are using your BB or old iphone for a while...

Why would it be deleted off the device itself ?
Because it's an online backup and not on the device. Again not a problem. While you're using your device the backup will stay in place and as soon as you stop using it you obviously don't need the backup. It's doing what backups are intended for. If the guy is unhappy about that he should move to a paid service or do manual backups to a different device.

Seems rather sketch. 2 months is not a long time...
Seriously? Two months on a device you use several times a day? I think it's safe to say if you haven't used it for 2 months you probably don't need it any more. Keep in mind if you use it within a 2 month period your backups remain indefinitely.

Now on to something else. I assume this is account based and not phone based. So the only reason people will get their backups deleted is if they moved away from Android or died.

I've got like 4 google accounts and one of my phones has been on airplane mode for a couple months.

Backup =/= we'll delete your sht after 2 months

The two are fundamentally incompatible.

It's fine though...I'm gradually moving my stuff away from google & android. Over these kind of fun surprise discoveries:

A Reddit user has discovered that Google will automatically delete

With 4 phones you regularly chop and change? Somehow the backup feature then wasn't meant for you. But seriously though, if you complain over 2 months you'd probably complain over any defined period. So how long should google store stuff for free that you'd never again use?

The fact that a reddit user only stumbled upon this after 10 years of Android I think says a lot.

They don't delete pictures and contact info, right? That's all I usually carry over to a new device, anyway.
