AFAIK it should work fine if the USSD command is set. Haven't done it myself (Contract). But I know there is people on here that has done that before.

Thanks Pitbull ... but how do I tell if USSD commands (you mean the *141#, right) can be sent? I'm using the bundled Huawei Mobile Connect software. It has an SMS feature but it doesn't mention USSD.

Like I said I never tried... Don't have my Laptop @ work today. I'll try when I get home and feedback... Check again at about 19:00
I have tried this on an E620 and it works but only on newer firmware versions.
I have also tried this on an E220, and using the current firmware it seems to work some of the time.

setting up e220 conection
call me stupid! do i have to set a different user or can i use the default mtn user already setup on the cards software. what other info do i need to set up eg dns etc? when i press connect it tries to dial up using my landline, is this normal?

You can use the MTN user that already setup
No it shouldn't try you landline
If you go to settings alt 5 then go to connection APN should be myMTN and number should be *99# user name MTN and password should be set

It shouldn't be that way, but it does happen if you try and connect and your data card is not plugged in, Windows chooses the next available device which is most likely your modem.
Check the properties of your 'MTN F@stlink' connection and make sure that it is set to connect using your data card and not your modem.

International roaming for data
If I am travelling to NZ will my E220 modem work there? Will I be able to use it by setting int roaming and how will I be charged and if too expensive will I be able to change settings on modem to use a sim from NZ service provider? Is MTN modem network locked? If so how do I unlock it?

It should work with a NZ sim and if you load Roaming it should work just remember to check if NZ has international data agreement
I'd advise that you rather use a local NZ sim way cheaper

Just to add. We currently do not have a data roaming agreement with Vodafone in NZ, it is still pending. Only voice and SMS is active.
As MTN DD mentioned. the only option is to utilise a local sim . You might find the link below useful for Vodafone NZ. They explain the charges etc for Data.

Also I have checked with MTN regarding the E220. It should not be locked. Just insert a VC sim here in S.A. If you able to pick up VC network signal then the card is not locked. So it will word in NZ with a local Sim.

mychoice 150 data contract (topup) would allocate you R150.00 airtime to make use of the internet, you may call the call centre to purchase a ddata bundle to make per mb usage cheaper of course-- plus they throw in either the haweui e220 or e620, judging by the tone of your question i think you might know this, just needed clarification perhaps?
