What functionality would your ultimate PVR have? Like automatic downloads of latest blockbusters for PAY PER VIEW? Recurring episode recording regardless of the channel? Network connection to log in and set recording schedule from outside of the house? PC connection for storage? Wireless signal sending without loss of quality? Built in DVD writer? HDMI outputs? 7.1 audio outputs. Internet? etc...

I would just prefer DSTv to be cheaper, that is all.

Automatically cutting out irritating ads, but still showing the good ones.

My Windows media center PC does most of this already, to record a series instead of episode press the record button twice or once to only record the episode, you can further customize the recording under advanced settings.

Edit:
In the US there is a program that cuts out ads too AFAIK.

OK, I think you missed the point so far. Anyone have any actual suggestions as to what functionality would make your Ultimate PVR?

Cutting out ads is one option - I like it. Maybe a somewhat unrealistic expectation considering that is the major funding though but I like it.

Cost is not a functionality and Sufferwell, what would make WMC better in your opinion?

Oh...then I would say 1TB HDD being used, much nicer Menu System (Animated), the ability to zoom in and out like Voodoo Movie (An old App), and be able to watch 9 screens at a time (Like DSTv used to do on a certain chanel)

Being able to record at least 2 channels at a time. The new HD PVR which we are rumoured to get will apparently only allow you to watch 1 channel at a time, but record another 2.

Being able to access the Harddrive from a pc via USb or ethernet.

Using the PVR as a multimedia server, i.e. it should be able to connect to a pc or whatever through ethernet and stream movies or music from the pc.

Mythtv with a complete interface redesign would be nice. Add to it a service like Apple's iTunes Store and its interface on Apple TV and we could be getting somewhere.

The main benefit of a system like mythtv is that it is completely open and you can add any extensions you like.

Well... I would like WMC to be more open for customization and plugins, most of what I need can be done already with adding the right hardware.

my pvr can do all those, except for HDMI and the auto downloading. HDMI is only a upgrade away.

it is based on MythTV on Gentoo.

another thing it can do is stop working for no apparent reason (MySQL went into a funny state)... it works most of the time though.

I'd like to be able to cut out adds, block out channels I don't like/watch from a list I select (and not have to pay for it), more recording time (1tb drive), multiple and simultaneous recording options (watch 1 record lots), functional/working USB port, nicer interface (that green thing isn't kwaai), PiP (?), free hardware upgrades, HD out, free/full games without having to SMS codes and stuff, internet downloads (legal/distro's)

Just let us use the USB port!!

Okay so I get the fact you can't download content from the pvr because of macrovision encoding, but at least allow us to upload stuff to the pvr. I have a few GB of TED video's which are free and I would rather not have to burn to DVD.

Also,
Why can't you be allowed to set and group your own channel numbers?
Why doesn't it support picture in picture?

I also agree with the other comment about a media on demand component, surely you can link the pvr to dstv on demand.

Just make it less like a VCR, it's so 90's

not exactly a PVR, but I'd much rather have this - popcornhour.com - hooked up to a decent bandwidth allocation.

Yeah agree. Windows Media Center can do about all of that already and the commercial skipping isn't limited to just the US. I use the commercial skip add-in and it's great not having to press the fast forward button or lower the volume everytime for a commercial break while watching my TV recordings.
