YouTube to introduce a subscription fee

I ( usually ) run adblock for the start-of-video ads, and I feel guilty for not paying the creator of the content for his(her) work.

I'll subscribe to lift that guilt any day.

Silly people who don't contribute it any way shape or form to a service that they use ;)

Weeeeell, actually, I subscribe, promote artists (music etc) on my facebook page, etc. If I find something I like, I try do my bit to promote the hell out of it or the content creator.
Got my kid and his mates into following Stampy on his Minecraft channel.

Awesome. I've been wanting something like this for a long time now. Especially nice when you are having a braai or party and want to just play music video or whatever without ad interruptions.

I reckon the pricing model is difficult since they still probably want to reward content creators. I hope that it is around $5 a month, anything more and I will have to think twice.

Why not just use Deezer for this?

Oh but I do, they collect my metadata for their algorithms. For free!

Also, I'm a consumer in their eyes, so tell us again what consumers do..

Consumers buy things. Since you're not seeing ads, you're not "buying" anything. Hell you aren't even paying for the bandwidth used to stream the video you're watching.

A real leech.

Nope they consume, else we'd be called 'buyers' which funny now you mention it.. we're not.

Since I never signed up I never agreed to watch ads, simple as that sunshine. What are you an 'free service ad watch enforcer' or summin? I should bloody well invoice them for every video I watch on YouTube since I'm contributing to their user stats. For free!

And I *am* actually paying for the bandwidth, unless you have the secret for a 100% free 10mbps service you wanna share with me?

Dumass.

I have just un-ticked the checkbox "Allow some non-intrusive advertising" in my Adblock settings, very powerful

Is Deezer like Grooveshark? That is pretty nice, but I like the videos to play on the large screen TV :)

YouTube launched a pilot program that allowed individual content creators to charge consumers a subscription fee to access a particular “channel” of videos.

Oh wait, so certain channels will be pay-to-view. Well that sucks, I thought they meant a monthly charge for everything.

Don't mind the ads and I don't have an issue with people who would want to pay to stop receiving ads.

In the end I want to help support the Youtubers who entertain me. It's sad that it seems there are people who don't feel the same.

But we are already supporting them by viewing and liking their videos. This is just corporate greed.

Unless you're donating to their patreon you're doing as much as those that switch on their headlights/bash their hooter to "fight" women abuse.

I disagree, but not going to debate your agenda any longer.

Anything you're forgetting is that you're using bandwidth and server time that you aren't paying for. So in a way it's worse than piracy as at least with that you're actively costing them money.

A lot of youtubers are s**t as well.

And who decides who is good enough to be paid and who isn't?

Point is you're getting entertainment and using website resources without "paying" by watching an add. It doesn't even cost you anything.

People always like to say that piracy isn't direct revenue loss, which is correct. You can't argue that with ad blockers though.

Viewing videos on a free albeit ad supported site worse than piracy? Dude no, just no. You're being ridiculous now.

I bet you think legit users who skip those ads after 5 seconds (intended functionality) should be rounded up and shot for treason or something.
