YouTube's ad-blocker blocker slows down videos on desktop browsers

YouTube has reportedly slowed down its desktop site for users as part of its effort to fight adblockers on the site, Android Central reports.

Reddit user (u/vk6_) shared a video showing a five-second delay experienced when trying to load videos on Firefox. They also demonstrated a method to sidestep the delays.

I wonder if this has anything to do with what the Irish oke found and reported to the Irish Data Protection Commission, which would push it up to the EU watchdog.

I haven't received a single ad with Adguard. Both Ghostery and uBlock are detected by YouTube, both have been actively working on workarounds. Adguard has been pretty great.

It might be more severe than that. We are inundated by complaints bout buffering on YouTube but we are unable to find any network-related issues that might be causing the issue. @Afrigirl
What's weird, is on WebAfrica at least, I haven't had issues with buffering on desktop...but the YT app on my Samsung TV? Buffering at random moments for no reason and fixed by weird things like...just manually setting the highest resolution which it previously buffered on.

Haven't had an ad with Brave's built-in blocker. However, I've had friends who have had issues.

Generally, I don't mind the ads at the start, but it is disruptive when ads are in the middle. I am currently subscribed to way too many services. I started to cut the bloat about 6 months ago, these overheads are getting cray.

YouTube Premium isn’t bad, but I don’t use the service to that extent to pay a monthly premium.

Another reason to stop being cheap & go Premium*?

*Assuming you use the service
I'm on Premium and have issues. Sometimes a video just won't play at all until refreshing the page, other times it drops to 480p on a 200Mbps line. Sometimes doing a search takes 5-10 seconds for the page to load. Overall the experience is 100x better on my phone.

I'm a longtime premium user and recently started experiencing this delay issue on FF on Win 10 and on SmartTube Beta on Nvidia Shield even though internet was fine. STB much better the YT TV App.

Google forcing FF users to Chrome. Hopefully EU will fine Google for this anti-competitive behavior.

In the offending code is the 5E3 ms delay.

Will give Adguard a try.

Also seeing similar behaviour using the Vinegar extension on iOS. It normally replaces YouTube's JS player with a simple, native HTML viewport, which also bypasses ads, and this happens near instantaneously. Now though, the viewport hangs the tab until 5 seconds pass.

Google knows its losing the battle with adblock, so its resorting to cheap tricks like artificial delays,

what next? when you type in a query, it asks are you sure? before displaying results.

I mean isn't the internet built with one goal in mind, be the most resilient and open platform on Earth?
wasn't that what made it so popular?
