Zen 2 Prices

...op probably thinks local retailers pay the same wholesale price as amazon, newegg etc.

That's kinda the point of the question. Where does the extra cost come from? Is it manufacturers, international distributors (high wholesale prices), taxes, local distributors, local retailers or is it some other hidden cost?

Are our local shops official distributors? If no, then they pay the retail price (less a small bulk discount) and carry costs I mentioned above to be able to sell it to us at the convenience of a click.

If you think they're ripping you off, why not start your own shop and undercut them?

It's mostly distributors. The ones who can sell products for 33% of the price to large retailers. But as usual the only thing you'll find on this forum are snarky comments like start your own shop if you can do it better.

As far as I know, there are local distributors who sell to shops.

I don't like this line of thinking, it's defensive and presumes that I am only blaming local retailers. I just want to know why we are paying more.

Yeah, I have noticed that people tend to get defensive when discussing this and I have no idea why. Don't people want to pay less? Everyone also always takes the retail price as a starting point as if they are importing the product themselves.

GPU prices have been screwed since the mining boom and it's mostly the manufacturers doing the screwing. If no one complains and just buys the products at their increased prices then there would be no reason for the manufacturers to change their prices. I Feel like it's a similar case here but I barely see any outrage at local prices of electronics.

I check ASBIS dealer list and see the Ryzen 7 3800X retail SKU listed for $459 (AMD list $399) so from the get go, local shops pay more than consumers in the US.

Okay so what’s ASBIS and why are it’s prices so exorbitant? Is it really an accurate indication of what local retailers are paying because if so then they are definitely losing money. What would be the point of buying at this price when it’s cheaper to import at retail price?

ASBIS is the only SA distributor according to AMD's website. They operate B2B and in dollars.

I think of retailers are doing OK price wise. Considering VAT and *especially* currency risk.

I know someone who worked at Matrix. She paid 42% of the retail value for pc parts and that's after profit. So the distributors are definitely ripping everybody off if they can give such large discounts for bulk orders. The smaller shops only add about 10% profit and still end up costing more than the large retailers. They've made it nearly impossible for the independent guy to make a profit which is why so many of them have closed up shop. I wanted to do it at one point but after seeing the practice and that there was no way I could be competitive I decided there's no point in it.

If they charged fairer base prices there would be more room for everybody to make a profit. Small retailers could compete with larger ones and larger ones would have to be satisfied will smaller discounts. Then there's also the practice of selling to the public so we have to be satisfied with the same prices the public pay and still add profit.

That's a scam. There is no currency risk for the retailers. If the distributors tell you they have a currency risk they're also lying. We can go to R10/$ overnight and they'd still make a profit on stock they bought at R14/$ with the prices they charge.

True!

I came here to say this. Seeing how many established guys have closed up shop makes it pretty clear that it isn't all champagne and huge profit margins.

We can order directly from Rectron and Dell through the company I work at, and Wootware is almost always cheaper than Rectron, and on the monitor I bought they matched Dell when they had a special. Sure, we probably get higher prices than PC shops because of our low volumes, but I don't think the retailers add hefty profit margins.

Depends on who the retailer is. I know a bit about reselling and discounts and how you can resell for less than the supplier. What they do is not pay for single items but instead on account and then get a bulk discount at the end of the month. You can get some big discounts for thousands of items per month and sell for lower than the supplier while still making substantial profit.

Unless you have a need for pcie4 I dunno why anyone would buy one.
Better VRM supposedly (with a move from ASROCK design and build at 55nm, to AMD collaboration with 14nm node GF), I'm literally only buying for PCIe 4 support since I want to hold on to this mobo for quite a while and don't want to bother swapping it (well, I lied, also want the USB Type C port, also waiting for a dual micro to type C cable for cheap, since it's one of the biggest efforts atm since only the desktops don't have Type C ports). It's pretty much the same price brackets as the X470 boards.
Only worried about the fan on the mobo.
