Who is going to have the best prices for the new AMD CPUs? Right now Wootware seems to be the best.

https://www.wootware.co.za/computer-hardware/cpus-processors/shopby/amd_/amd_ryzen_3rd_gen

As a side note, why are we constantly being ripped off by local prices of pc Hardware. Who is making the extra money? Retail price for the 3800x is $399 add 15% VAT to that and it's $458.85. Why do we have to pay more than that? Everyone says shipping but they are also shipped to the places where they sell for $399, they don't magically appear there. Retailer margin is also included in that price. Who is making the extra money out of us poor South Africans?

3600X = $250=R3550
R3550x1.1x1.15=R4490 and Wootware sells it for R4599

3800X = $399=R5665
R5665x1.1x1.5=R7165 and Wootware sells it for R7199

I fail to understand how you are being ripped off?

Secondly the US list price you see excludes any state and/or local taxes, you only see those when you checkout your basket of goods.

Why are you adding 10% and then 15%?

I know those prices exclude sale tax but even if you add 15% to them we are still paying 10% more over here and that is for a special price at wootware. Everyone else is selling them for another 10% more. It’s not just these cpus either. Hardware here is always way more. Obviously part of it is exchange rate fluctuations but I think that doesn’t account for it.

Because that is what SARS does when you import goods.

How is VAT calculated on imported goods?
The VAT rate in South Africa is currently 15%.

To calculate VAT on imported goods, the ATV (added tax value) needs to be determined first.

This is done as follows:

[(Customs Value + 10% thereof) + (any non-rebated duties levied on the goods)] x 15%
= [ATV] x 15%
= VAT payable

No that is wrong. You don't add 10% and then VAT. You add VAT on an extra 10% of the value but you don't add the 10% to the value so current VAT is actually 16.5%. You effectively added 26.5% VAT.

So it should be
R3550 x 1.165 = R4136 &
R5665 x 1.165 = R6600

I don't know what the import duties are though.

Okay I guess that the import duty will add to the cost but the distributors in this country aren’t buying products at retail price, they are buying wholesale. I still don’t be think that accounts for the discrepancy though.

How much will you pay if you import it yourself including tax, duties and shipping?
Retailers are there to make as much money as possible. You being poor is not their fault.

3600x from amazon,

Not a massive saving, op probably thinks local retailers pay the same wholesale price as amazon, newegg etc. Comparing local retail prices to the US is simply unrealistic, you can be glad you're not paying eu, canada etc prices.

And of course you have no local support for the product and warranty.

Crazy that people are actually standing outside micro-center to get these cpu's!
People did the same for the "new" iPhone. I am honestly trying to see the big deal over these? I mean people were saying don't buy now wait till the 3 series comes out and you'll see. So if I'd waited for the 3 series, I'd have not had a PC for 6 months and have actually ended up paying more for the CPU. Sure I would've saved on RAM prices as those have come down R500 bucks.

I waited a week after PC died for one, though it will be two weeks as lead time. :p

Upgrading from a 4460 to a 3600, also including an Nvme SSD. Big upgrade, first machine with more than four cores, so will steal it when I need to export something in Premiere or convert (Intel and Netflix SV AV1 library makes AV1 conversion worthwhile, still takes forever).

The price of the 3600 is less than the 2700 was with higher performance single threaded, so not complaining.

Now if only laptops could start coming down in price, my 4720HQ is getting long in the tooth. :(

That's not too bad, but waiting and waiting. Also wouldn't more cores be better for that?

Yes, definitely, but that's adding quite a bit to the cost to move up, don't think it's worth for my use case.

Maybe the other machine in a year when people are moving to 4 series, but my brother stopped rendering animations at home, so not worth it anymore.

I'm mostly happy as the single core performance increase, with the ability to just swap out the mobo years down without an issue. My 4460 CPU is fine, it's the motherboard that's dead, so any replacement is at least 3 years old, not worth it for me, took it as an excuse to upgrade with something where I can replace only the part that dies/performs slowly.

Haven't ordered motherboard yet, not sure if I'd rather get an X570 and then side grade to something better next year, since the X570 have better power delivery but more importantly way more USB 3.2/3.1 ports, just worried about the on board fans since cooling PCIe 4 and seeing if cost worth when it gets to SA.

Well the good thing is you could at least sell the 4460 for a little buffer on the upgrade :). See I didn't have a PC for over 9 years, so I needed to get one and the 2600 in March was perfect. Only then to suddenly luck into a case and a motherboard from a friend. So from no PCs to two :-). Sure the one is only a I5 4430, but it's got an RX580 which does seem to allow it to play most games quite well.

You take the +10% value only to calculate the tax. You don't pay 10% more on the base.
It should be
Base + (Base*1.1*0.15)

You can't actually compare private import to local prices. For one thing it's already taxed and then taxed again when it gets here. Suppliers get it from the manufacturer in the country of origin so it only gets taxed once it gets here. Best is to look at the MRSP and there we are been ripped a new one on most hardware with single distributors.
