I'm a sucker for a supercar with mad styling. The Zenvo TS1 GT is just such car.

Zenvo TS1 GT 10th Anniversary

Zenvo Automotive presented the 10th Anniversary TS1 GT model at the 87th Geneva International Motor Show 2017.

The car is a unique, one-off, bespoke TS1 GT which has been built specifically to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the company. Zenvo has specified and built the car to reflect the heritage of the company and its founders from Denmark. This historic TS1 GT has been named 'Sleipnir' [pronounced: "Sleep-near"] after the eight-legged horse ridden by Odin, the King of the Norse gods in ancient Scandinavian mythology. Sleipnir was 'the fastest and best horse among gods and men.'

The recognition of the heritage of Scandinavia and its historical significance does not stop there. This very special TS1 GT has been painted in 'Fjord Blue' and highlighted by copper-bronze strips on the hood and roof of the car which are set into the bare carbon-fibre panels as well as contrasting copper highlights both inside and outside of the car. The use of copper-bronze recognizes the technological advancements by ancient Danes in exploration, trading and commerce extending from North America to Russia and the Middle East. In the pre-history of Scandinavia, Bronze was the most advanced material available. It was used in multiple applications including the design and building of chariots. Bronze was the carbon-fibre of its age and provided a technical advancement which allowed the unparalleled growth of the Vikings and the Scandinavian region.

The application of advanced technology within the region continues with the production of some of the most technically advanced hypercars in the world. Using extensive lightweight carbon-fibre and other hybrid composite materials as well as a unique proprietary drivetrain with ultra-fast advanced gear-shift, traction control and ESC technology, the quality of Zenvo engineering and the precision quality of production are the worthy successors of our innovative ancestors.

"Presenting this car at Geneva and celebrating our tenth anniversary makes me very proud and humble", said Troels Vollertsen, Technical Director and Founder of Zenvo Automotive A/S. "We have achieved so much with a small team of highly dedicated and capable individuals. All of us recognize our heritage as pioneers of technology and remain totally committed to continue to produce and develop Zenvo cars which provide our owners and drivers with a sensational experience of performance, quality and perfect driving pleasure which is the DNA of our brand and our cars. We look forward with great excitement to the next ten years."

Their original car was the ST1 of 2010.

Zenvo ST1

The Zenvo ST1 is designed to express the excessive power and performance of the car.

The design brief from the Zenvo creators to the designers at hermann & brandt design consultancy was to design a supercar that looked like no other supercar. The design had to be aggressive mixing supercar styling with race car elements.

The design of the Zenvo ST1 is made from free flowing accelerating lines creating the shape of the wheel arches, the roof line, side line and the lower side air intake. The sharp lines are connected by muscular organic surfacing creating dramatic reflections. Contrasting the general surfacing the design features a race car inspired lower carbon splitter.

The front of the Zenvo ST1 is designed around the hexagonal trademark Zenvo grille flanked by the large front air intakes used for brakes and engine cooling. The intakes are raked back to minimize drag and at the same time making the side impression of the car more compact.

The theme of the front is repeated in the rear which is designed around the big diffuser necessary for high speed stability. As on the front the center volume is flanked by large air exits extracting hot engine air as well as housing the exhaust and rear lights.

The rear spoiler mandatory for a car capable of extreme high speeds is partly integrated in the rear wing. It has a unique aerodynamic design following the raked shape of the rear end.

Zenvo TS1 GT 2017 review

Should I buy one?

There are other problems, such as the long, spongey brake pedal, but the biggest issue I have with the car is its asking price. Super Veloce Racing hopes to find between two and five buyers per year, so they're realistic about volumes.

And while Zenvo will almost certainly make good improvements in the final stages of development, I’m yet to be convinced that the TS1 GT will ever feel like an ultra-high-quality, crafted-by-artisans, jewel-like device the way a Pagani does. Super-demanding clients will be even harder to convince.

This thing is why little boys grow up to be petrol heads.

878kW Zenvo TSR-S is a road-going race car

Zenvo has unleashed a more extreme version of its TS hypercar.

Essentially a street-legal version of the TSR race car, the TSR-S gets a “revolutionary” rear wing and a more powerful version of the Danish firm’s twin-supercharged 5.8-litre V8 engine.

The high-revving V8 has been modified to produce an astounding 878kW and over 1100Nm, allowing for a 2.8 second zero to 100km/h run - in fact it’ll get to 200 in just 6.8 secs, says Zenvo.

The engine is mated to a seven-speed automated manual gearbox with ‘dog’ gears for track driving. Said to be one of the fastest-shifting gearboxes in the world, it’s capable of switching between a standard road gearbox configuration and a brutal mechanical direct power-shift race set-up for the track.

However the thing that Zenvo is the most proud of is its Centripetal active rear wing, for which a patent is currently pending.

Featuring two rotational axes, the this huge wing can function both as an air break and a cornering stabiliser. Around corners, the wing rotates relative to the car’s longitudinal axis, generating an inward force together with the conventional downforce.

As company founder (and technical chief) Troels Vollertsen puts it: “Whereas most supercars only achieve optimum downforce in cornering at a certain speed, the multi-rotational function of the wing distributes downforce in an innovative way to deliver the optimum amount of cornering grip at any speed.

“Whilst lifting to boost downforce, the wing also tilts while cornering – for example, lifting the left side of the wing when cornering left and vice versa, to propel the car to the inside of the corner, ensuring exceptional stability and grip.”

The wing forms part of a comprehensive aerodynamic package that help the TSR-S generate three times more downforce than the TS1 GT.
This extreme Danish hypercar will also enjoy an extreme sense of exclusivity, with Zenvo planning to build just five of them per year.

Zenvo TSR-S 2019 review

Should I buy one?

That's the seven-figure question. Zenvo has made several previous attempts to increase sales, none of which have stuck. The TSR-S feels much more convincing than the brand's earlier offerings, but it is still wearing a pricetag that puts it in competition with some very senior rivals.

If you're a billionaire who wasn't able to get on the list for a Senna, a Valkyrie or a Ferrari SF90 then this could be a fascinating alternative; or indeed if you have a full set then the Zenvo could be something compellingly different.

Zenvo’s mad 1,177bhp hypercar is now a hybrid

Update pack gives Denmark's hypercar leccy power and more carbon

The car with the wildest wing in the world is back. Yep, Zenvo’s TSR-S has been given a raft of updates to make sure the 1,177bhp Koenigsegg rival is still relevant in the fast-moving (in more ways than one) hypercar space. It’s all buzzwordy stuff, too, including hybrid assistance and carbon fibre. Truly, you can never have enough carbon fibre.

Yes, a hybrid. It’s not some mad Regera-like triumvirate of electric motors and a big battery pack. Zenvo has instead tucked away a tickle of e-assistance in the gearbox, a small drivetrain development that modifies the unique seven-speed sequential gearbox with helical-cut dog gears (those whiney, toothy motorsport gears) to offer two changeable modes: ‘Road’ and ‘Race’. The two options are selected via a switch on the steering wheel, with the road setting using the electrical assistance to smooth out the juddery, noisy harshness of the ‘box.

Should you desire something a little more raw, flick it to race for even quicker shift times. Above that, the hybrid element gives a power boost, further traction control and even the addition of an eighth forward gear with the electric motor now providing reverse drive too.

Zenvo TSR-S

Zenvo has revealed its latest commission TSR-S alongside further developments from the Danish hypercar manufacturer. This example of the 1177bhp twin-supercharged V8 TSR-S model, the street legal variant of the TSR track car, has received numerous bespoke touches and is the first car to receive full fragmented carbon fibre wheels designed, developed and built in-house by Zenvo as well as individual weave designs within the exposed carbon fibre body sections.

Following Danish design ideals of innovation and creativity, the geometric pattern carbon fibre visible within the blue tinted central stripe is a further evolution of Zenvo's class leading carbon fibre technology and personalisation options, such as the bespoke 'watermark' carbon fibre graphics featured on previous TSR-S models. This technique has also been used on the exposed carbon fibre side pods, with the Zenvo logo emblazoned within the material in an opposing herringbone pattern.

Under the skin: The secret to rapid gearshifts in a road car

Supercar maker Zenvo's seven-speed transmission shifts faster with no synchromesh

Zenvo is another of those niche supercar makers that spends more time seeking better ways to perform an old trick than mainstream manufacturers have either the time or money for. Its new 1177bhp TSR-S hypercar is equipped with not a sequential, dual-clutch transmission for fast shifting but the firm’s automated manual ‘dog ’box’ transmission based on lighter, more aggressive motorsport principles.

Dog ’box is the moniker given to dog engagement gearboxes typically found in all manner of race and rally cars. It’s simple, strong and fast shifting and lacks the usual synchromesh that enables crunchless shifts but blocks super-fast gearchanges.

Most gearboxes, aside from torque-converter-based automatics and CVTs, are fundamentally similar and the selection of a gear ratio depends on temporarily locking a gear that is usually free spinning (neutral) to its shaft. The locking is done by a dog clutch when the driver selects the gear, something that involves the interlocking of tooth-like steel ‘dogs’ on the gear, with grooves in the dog clutch.

The shaft and dog clutch are usually spinning at higher speeds that the gear being selected and engaging the gear can involve a lot of noise, crunching, clunking and roughness, which is not acceptable in a road car, not even a supercar. On the upside, a manual dog ’box does allow a skilled driver to make very fast, seamless upshifts without the use of the clutch.

A synchromesh gearbox is essentially the same animal, with gears engaged by dog clutches sliding along a shaft. The difference is a synchroniser between the dog clutch and gear, harmonising the speed of the two and avoiding the ‘dog-on-dog’ clash that causes all the noise and wear.

The Top Gear car review:

Zenvo TSR-S

Verdict

Final thoughts and pick of the range

The car with the world’s most bonkers rear wing is crude, sure, but not without its charms

What’s the question if the answer is Zenvo? It’s not like you’re going to list the attributes you want from a car and arrive at the conclusion that the TSR-S is the only thing that fits the bill. And this is the dilemma at the heart of cars like this. You don’t need it, it doesn’t perform a useful function, it’ll be awkward to use and tricky to run. And some of it doesn’t work as well as it should. The suspension needs more fettling, but the biggest drawback is the gearbox. As it stands at the moment, it’s not fit for purpose – whatever purpose you choose for this car to have.

All a car like this needs to justify its existence is a USP, and in its bonkers rear wing the TSR-S has a good one. Seven figures to have a rear wing that moves like a Strictly contestant with a cactus caught in their strides? Beyond frivolous. But it’s not a car you’re buying, it’s an experience and part of that experience when the company is this small, is that you’re buying into the firm, they’re taking you along with them. This is an extreme automotive purchase, and alongside anything from a big name brand it’s relatively crude. But there’s a certain charm in that: I can think of no wilder numberplated ride than this.
