Zille new DA leader

Midrand - Cape Town mayor Helen Zille was elected the new leader of South Africa's main opposition Democratic Alliance at a party congress in Midrand near Johannesburg on Sunday.

Zille saw off a challenge from the party's national chairman Joe Seremane and DA Eastern Cape leader Athol Trollip.

She is to take over the reigns of the liberalist party from retiring veteran Tony Leon.

Zille has been at the helm of Cape Town for the past year - the only major South African municipality not governed by the nationally ruling African National Congress.

Damn we can live in hope. However, I feel it is going to be as important to everyday life as the discovery of an earth-like planet orbiting a neighbouring star.

I wrote a letter to Santa asking him to "schizm" the ANC into 2 or 3 factions and to convince the IFP and DA to join forces. I hope I have been a good boy.

I was really hoping Seremane was going to be it. But I suppose that would be racist.

Good luck to her (I am sure she will continue the long heritage of the DA though I fear she has taken on too much.)
 
With a white leader the DA is unfortunately going to remain the "white" party and as such will never pose a real threat to the ANC.

I don't think that's the problem. The IFP should then clearly be the main opposition in the country, which they are not.

The fact is just that the ANC are the supposed 'saviors' and they get the votes.
 
He he... All those previously more senior DA people who upset her are now going to get slapped!

The DA doesn't want the votes of racist people who vote by colour anyway. It's against party policy.

Whichever way it is unlikely DA would ever pose a threat to ANC (which brings us back to the issue of racism, ie, those that look to "white" and "black" are inherently racists.) Unfortunately.

The ANCs biggest threat is the ANC.

Surely 'the ANC' is the numerical majority in this country (by [-]tribe[/-] creed?)

They could at least pose a threat to a 2/3 or 3/4 majority. It's sad that not enough people understand that having a healthy opposition would benefit everyone.

Unfortunately pasting a black face on this would go some way to 'alleviating' the issue above. But so be it.
 
Zille is fluent in one or more black languages.

I really hope Helen keeps everyone awake and on their toes in Parliament.
There is definitely room for improvement in just about every sphere of Government.

And for democracy, Zille should oppose a third term by Mbeki.
Amending that part of our Constitution could open up a can of worms later on.
Not saying President Mbeki isn't suitable.
It is just not appropriate and should not be attempted with our young democracy, like Floor Crossing that seemed a good idea at the time.
