Zille new DA leader

I really hope Helen keeps everyone awake and on their toes in Parliament.
There is definitely room for improvement in just about every sphere of Government.

And for democracy, Zille should oppose a third term by Mbeki.
Amending that part of our Constitution could open up a can of worms later on.
Not saying President Mbeki isn't suitable.
It is just not appropriate and should not be attempted with our young democracy, like Floor Crossing that seemed a good idea at the time.

Agreed - the 3rd term has nothing to do with "the best man for the job" - rather it sets a very dangerous precedent.

Since when is he best man for the job? He's the worst president we have ever had. Distant, racist, arrogant, thieving, unaccountable, poor leader ... that's just for starters.

I mean he hasn't even had the courtesy EVER to have a meeting meet the leader of the opposition party. It says it all

Note my quotes. I was quoting the opinion being bandied about. By no means whatsoever, in even my most forgiving state of mind, would I call him that - in fact, in my opinion, he is *yet* to govern in any meaningful way. It took him how many years to meet Tony Leon, but he "tjommies" it up with Mugabe every bloody month it seems.

I would not mind if Thabo was pres. for a 3rd term. I mean we never know who will come in and bugger this place up even more. Rather the devil we know.
Completely wrong attitude. marine1 wants [-]Bob[/-] Thabo for ever! Bwaahahaha!

I would rather have Thabo forever than lets say maybe Zuma or some leader who is more racist. I say we have seen the worst of Mbeki. We could have a far worse person in power. Obviously I would rather have the DA, IFP, DAGA party in power :D

Kilo39 is right, I'm afraid ... I'm sure the Zimbabweans said "Better the devil we know" as well. If Mbeki is allowed a third term it will set a dangerous precedent.

Hell, why not do it the way the Yanks do it and make the President work for a living i.e. throw the presidency open to the people every 4 years ... now that'd make the ANC sit up and take notice ... I hope.

Apologies marine1 (was considering deleting my post, filled with ridicule.)

Problem is sets a precedent: and Thabo already leans towards Bob.

(would hope not all devils and a suitable candidate steps forward. otherwise Zuma: seriously wonder if he would be any 'worse' than Thabo.)

BTTB, The third term discussions around Mbeki concern the ANC presidency. No one has suggested amending the constitution for a third national term.

Whether it would be a heathy state of affairs to have Mbeki remain as ANC president and run the country by proxy, is another question.

IanC, Our president is reelected every five years, not sure that the extra year (from the US) makes a big difference. The problem is not the length of the term, but as others have said the fact that there really isn't a serious threat from the opposition.

I hope that Zille can maybe start to turn the DA into a more relevant opposition. The DA has spent the past ten years trying to be the Anti-ANC, defining themselves by their role of opposing the ANC.

The problem with "rather the devil you know", is while it may ensure a "not too bad", it also prevents the entry of a "damn - he is what we needed".

And, I just have to be punny - feel free to ignore :-)

"It sets a bad precedent" becomes "it sets a bad president".

yeah yeah, I know - :p

It's impossible. It's (unfortunately) also inevitable that the president of the ANC will become the president of SA. I say NO to a 3rd term. Let's see who they come up with. (GOD i pray not Zuma)

... think Zille has taken on too much (and DA has given her too much.)

I wonder if we can 'appoint' another Mayor?
