Helen Zille has received so many death and bomb threats in the past three weeks that her security changes her car regularly. On Tuesday evening she had to be whisked away from a prayer meeting in Khayelitsha after more than 50 taxi drivers tried to block the entrance to the Mew Way Hall.

On the eve of the DA's whipping of the ANC, Cope and the Independent Democrats in two by-elections held in Mitchells Plain and Bellville on Wednesday Zille said she believes the taxi drivers threatening her are opposed to the new public transport system ahead of 2010.

Chief of VIP protection Mthethuvumule Mantambo confirmed that taxi drivers were threatening Zille's life on Tuesday evening. He also said that the Civic Centre, where Zille's mayoral office is situated, had to be evacuated on four occasions in as many weeks because of bomb threats against Zille.

But the DA is upbeat in the Western Cape after crushing wins in the two Western Cape by-elections. On Wednesday the party won almost 80% (5 040 votes) of the vote in Mitchells Plain. The ID, which had held the ward, polled 505 votes, the ANC 439 and Cope 164. And the DA took 96% of the votes in the Bellville by-election.

Other by-elections saw the incumbent parties retaining their seats. Of 24 wards in the country in which results were known by the time of going to press, the ANC retained 19.

But 10 wards in the Amathole district in the Eastern Cape were still awaiting results. These wards are considered to constitute a Cope stronghold, including as they do the hometown of axed Eastern Cape premier Nosimo Balindlela, who joined the breakaway party.

Threats from the taxi industry shud not be taken lightly.
They do have an efficient elimination system running amongst themselves.
If they see her as a threat to their thuggery then they may just take a chance - I doubt they have the sophistication to get to some who can be that well guarded though but...

The authorities let the situation drift. Look at the saga with the University Jammie Shuttle bus that carries students around Cape Town. The taxi industry threw a tantrum about that and instead of confronting them then, they conceded. Now it's run by the taxi people. It isn't badly run, but it demonstrated that they don't want opposition. Zillie did nothing tangible about it for a long time and now just prior to the elections she tries to tangle with them as part of her show. It ain't going to work. This is long-term stuff.

When you say "threw a tantrum" you mean pulled a gun on one of the Jammie drivers along their route. Makes it a difficult situation.

The BRT taxi drivers vs. the city thing isn't new. I'm sure she hasn't been doing nothing until the elections, it obviously also heats up as it gets closer to implementation though.

Surely this is the time to stand up to them, not concede. It's the same as terrorism, you don't negotiate openly with them because it only gets worse.

Zille is just creating a media storm for the elections. It's quite obvious.
 
All the political parties should team up (i know), and kick this taxi war in the butt.
These 'people' are no better than warlords, drug dealers, breakdown drivers and some people & politicians who think they can just do what they want.

I believe we need Marshall Law (preferally by a Judge) in this country for the next 5 years - clean this country up & be proud of it. No white or black, rich or poor, public or politician should get away with any crime --- no matter how small !!!

After 5 years... people will respect civilised rules & not just the laws
It not easy for most of us... but without obeying laws... we will all lose
