President Jacob Zuma on Saturday called on business people to donate to his education trust so that it can increase the number of poor children who benefit from it.

Having started with only R500 000 about 15 years ago, the Jacob Zuma RDP Education Trust, which has educated many disadvantaged children, now has a budget of R10 million which mainly comes from business people who contribute to the fund.

“The budget has grown but we plead with business people to help because there are so many young who need help,” said Zuma during the trust's function in Durban on Saturday night.

Zuma said more 4000 children had applied and that only 500 had been assisted this year. The trust supported 952 children in 2010, he said.

He said he had decided to form the trust because he knew how difficult it was for poor, rural children to access education.

“I also encountered difficulties when I grew up and ended up not going to school,” he said.

Zuma, who has no formal qualification, said that as a child he had dreamed of becoming a lawyer, a teacher or a priest.

I would love to see some of our prominent businessman black and white contribute to the fund.
Especially those that have benefited by the notorious black empowerment deals.
Lets see who steps up to the plate and gives back to the communities?

I would have no problem giving to the fund, however what guarantees do i have that my money wont be used to line the pockets of our wonderful leaders.

I'm just as likely to donate to political funds as I am to donate to marketed religeon

How else can he send ALL his kids to school and varsity!!!!?

What exactly does the fund do?

Pay for school fees? Provide the children with clothes? Feed them?

Before I donate any of my money, I need clear and precise guidelines as to HOW the money will be used.

We already know how our tax money is wasted - as far as I am concerned, something like this which has even less controls cannot be good.

I have personally done some work with one of his other entities the JACOB ZUMA FOUNDATION. I must say although I dont support the ANC that I was very impressed with the "grass roots" approach to assisting his people in the areas surrounding his home.
While I was there he had at least 30-40 people laying their case for assistance personally to him. There were grannies that could not feed their grandkids, and people who could not afford school uniforms and many others. JZ (before his presidency) reached into his own pocket to help these people. Nowadays, he has created this Foundation in an attempt be be transparent with these hand outs. Everything is registered and evaluated from what I saw......and there are still streams of ordinary people at his house every day. I was there to do an interview with him, but he wouldn't let me in until he had dealt with all the waiting people....23h00.

Why isn't Malema, being such a champion for the poor, asked to donate the earnings from his company's tenders to the trust?

Rather donate it to me. I will use the money to buy lots of bling and whatever I have left I will piss out against a wall.

At least I am honest about where the money goes...

Perhaps JZ should have been asking for donations for this, instead of encouraging "donations" to the ANC for business transaction to go through.

How much do you want? This sounds like a worthy cause. At least I know where the money is going.

Here we have a man who has the power to improve education for all and he asks for donations towards his elitist (in this context) pet project?

And how much of this money goes to "admin" costs?

Sorry for been pessemistic, but with all the corruption going on at the hands of top governemt official, these not a snowballs chance in hell that I am going to give to any foundation that has a government stamp or official in charge.

Once bitten, twice shy.

If he wants us to help the poor then he and his croneys need to set an example first.

What about the Nelson Mandela Trust, the ORTambo trust, the WinnieMandela funds .. a politician THINKS that if a charity is in their name for some arbitrary noble cause, then they are 'Good people' - It has nothing to do with doing good, its about perceived image and association

From millions in donations, he pulls a few bucks of his pocket, to help people with long term problems...

Wish the poor would wake the f**k up...

Yes, I see the part of "attempt to be transparent"... Tell me another joke.
