President Jacob Zuma on Saturday called on business people to donate to his education trust so that it can increase the number of poor children who benefit from it.
Having started with only R500 000 about 15 years ago, the Jacob Zuma RDP Education Trust, which has educated many disadvantaged children, now has a budget of R10 million which mainly comes from business people who contribute to the fund.
“The budget has grown but we plead with business people to help because there are so many young who need help,” said Zuma during the trust's function in Durban on Saturday night.
Zuma said more 4000 children had applied and that only 500 had been assisted this year. The trust supported 952 children in 2010, he said.
He said he had decided to form the trust because he knew how difficult it was for poor, rural children to access education.
“I also encountered difficulties when I grew up and ended up not going to school,” he said.
Zuma, who has no formal qualification, said that as a child he had dreamed of becoming a lawyer, a teacher or a priest.
I would love to see some of our prominent businessman black and white contribute to the fund.
Especially those that have benefited by the notorious black empowerment deals.
Lets see who steps up to the plate and gives back to the communities?
I would have no problem giving to the fund, however what guarantees do i have that my money wont be used to line the pockets of our wonderful leaders.
