Where there is ill-discipline in a school you do end up with broken windows. Fix the pupils discipline and conduct and you have solved the problem of broken windows.

not as easy as that, in the WC they have a prob with gangsters coming into schools and destroying things, so im sorry to disappoint you, but the prob is not so simple.

My father teaches in a school in Western Cape that isn't even renowned for gangsters yet the amount of knifes he takes from students are alarming. There has been a few incidences where the gangsters comes to the school to "sort out" a student or a teacher, but luckily the police arrived before anything really happens. Apart from that they do start on time and do achieve a decent pass rate in the 70%, but I still think it isn't good enough.

I agree 100% that the principle makes all the difference to success or failure at a particular school. Problem is there is no accountability.

Principle does f-all, regional heads (or whatever they are called nowdays) at provincial level do nothing about it. Regions are in horrendous state, MEC for education in the province does not discipline the regional heads so f-all happens. Province is a bunfight, education minister does less than f-all to sort out the MEC. Entire education system is f-ed, minister takes zero responsibility and spends plenty ammo on parties and flash new cars .
Now to me, if JZ really was really serious about sorting out education, he'd make sure a performance clause was built into the ministers' contract... and no BS excuses. Education still f-ed by the end of the year, she's fired. Then you'll see the minister putting the same kind of pressure on the MEC's, who'll push the same lower down until you get to the principles. No performance ... no job... simple

Indeed, but these tools in government don't seem to understand that. Just think how much better off we'd be now if they'd gotten started on fixing things with gr1's 16 years ago instead of having a big party and blaming all the stuff-ups on apartheid. Now they sit with a moeruva hangover and are still saying education is suffering due to "the ghosts of the past". Of course nothing will have changed if you've done nothing to change it

Well I always maintain that SA is heading one way, I care less if i get blasted by those who label others and tell them to f-off overseas, its the truth unless these thick skinned idiots pull their head out of their ass.
What is a country without education, look at what India has done, they spotted a gap, invested in education and it paid off. This lazy bunch are just power-hungry and are all for self gain!

True, discipline is the problem. Kids cannot be punished anymore, and they get away with everything. Back when I was in school, I got 6 of the best for littering (throwing a folded paper jet out of the 3rd floor window). Then I prayed my parents don't find out or that 6 will turn into 12 at home. These days it's assault
