Zuma: Learn from 'old white schools'

I have to say (disclaimer: I have never agreed with Apartheid)

But I have to thank my lucky stars that I was educated mostly before 1994. I was in a guvament school my parents did not have the means to send me to the posh schools. And I will never have kids because educating them in this country is not a good idea.

I went to one of the good government schools and it was not cheap. My parents struggled to afford it. There were plenty of nearly free government schools, but they were mostly rubbish. Those who can afford it send their children to the better government schools or go private.

Principle does f-all, regional heads (or whatever they are called nowdays) at provincial level do nothing about it. Regions are in horrendous state, MEC for education in the province does not discipline the regional heads so f-all happens. Inspiration from the top has benefits, but often things like this don't get fixed by relying on bureaucrats or those at the top. Each school should take it upon themselves to do the best they can with whatever they have. It's undoubtedly the case that schools attended by poorer people have poor facilities - many of those schools were rubbish to begin with and the parents can't pay extra to improve things - but they can make an effort. And there's another problem, parents. I understand not everyone has a good education and therefore can't give their child the benefits that provides in the home, but the very least they can do is raise their children as best they can and encourage them to do their best. Unfortunately it is not unusual that the laziest, most ignorant and stupid people are the ones that breed like rabbits (here or anywhere else).

I agree. The parents play a big part in the non performance of their kids. From talking to a couple of mothers at work, it seems that they think that since they pay school fees, (which granted is a new thing for them and quite expensive when seen from their point of view) it is up to the school to educate and almost raise their kids.

When I was a kid we would get anything from bribes to beltings from our folks and teachers to better our grades. These days parents don't seem to take the same interest. In certain homes anyway, and not all poor homes either.

The problem seems to me to be a culture of "education is not important, we don't really need it to survive". The same goes for their kids birthdays and christmas. They just don't make a big deal out of any of it. A new pair of shoes is more valuable to them (the moms). Sometimes I want to scream in frustration for these poor kids.

The sooner we can change that culture the sooner things can improve, both on the side of the school staff (who also need an attitude adjustment in most cases, as well as training) and the parents, and through them, the kids.

lucky you, I once asked me dad If I can get paid for each distinction I get, he gave me a big PK....When I asked him what for, he said its because I got 90% and not 91% for math, never asked that dumb question again :)

I never undertsood birthdays when growing up, havent celebrated mine in the past 6 years, its just another day really. I grew up in a home where mother's day, father's day and birthdays weren't a big thing, from time to time we might go and eat out, but it just doesn't seem all that special to me.

Its not in the interest of the ANC to improve the education system. When people are educated, they start questioning and stop accepting things at face value - this is counter revolutionary and not in the overall interest of the current Guavamint!

It is much easier to keep the people subservient and then they will do anything you tell them to do. its EXACTLY what that apartheid NATS done to the people.. (the schools were one mass Propaganda machine)
