Cape Town - There was not a need to apologise about President Jacob Zuma's promise that the government would create 500 000 job opportunities last year, deputy Police Minister Fikile Mbalula said on Monday.

Speaking in the National Assembly during the debate on last week's State of the Nation address, he reacted to scepticism over the total by telling MPs they needed to understand dialectics.

"The ANC government under... President Zuma is committed to the creation of jobs. There is no shift about that and there is no retreat. Neither is there an apology about what he said about the creation of 500 000 jobs."

He then offered the following explanation: "We said what was feasible, that we are going to do, but our plans in relation to that, you must understand this in a dialectical form. And understand things are changing. Nothing is static."

But they do know the difference between jobs and job opportunities?
Does this mean that there where an opportunity for 500 000 people to get a job or does this mean that there were the a possible 500 000 opportunities created?

The only thing I’m certain of is that an opportunity does not mean that 500 000 people are now employed that were previously not.

There were an opportunity for the ANC not to waste money and not be corrupt... but that also did not happen did it.

Thanx.

But he bragged about it in the State of the nation address.

And did he not say one million at one point?

By saying "job opportunities", instead of just "jobs", they can just say that there was opportunities, but people didn't make use of it. Shifting the blame in other words.

I'm not sure but he is not to blame imo,the downturn is causing alot of people to lose jobs and makes finding a job quite hard.Atleast they are being ambitious with what they want to do! :D

Agreed..and it was the first time i see a politician giving real numbers with a timeline. He didn't make it but it is a hell lot better than the "we need to..." statements given by politicians for as long as i live.

Stumbling is not falling.

Like everything else.

He is not to blame but saying you are going to create jobs and promising it will be done in the same year a recession makes you a dwindling idiot in my opinion.

But hey we all know he does not write his speeches so he can blame it on the person writing the paper he is reading from too if that suits him. Accountability is f all in this country.

I don't think the semantics are going to go down well with the people who don't have jobs. He's backing himself into a corner badly.

Saw D'lille giving him a basting in parliment on tv this morning :D

Like everything else.

Well then he learnt everything he knows from Obama.

Of course he does not,or is this where we pin it down to Zuma only?

The white house even have a director of speechwriting.

I think it might be the other way around

Yes I know but most people at least try not to look like they are only reading it. I never said just him, I said he does it no comparing him to anybody. But let’s not compare him to most people to...

Have to agree there, its quite awful.

I would love to know what Fikile thinks he means by "understand this in a dialectical form".

Because I'm sure he *doesn't* mean that we should argue about this until we understand it.

"jobs and job opportunities"

doesn't matter ........

it only makes himself an idiot......

who cares :p

if you have a brain, you know that he is BS
if you have no brain, no matter what he said you are going to believe him.

So what is the point to argue "jobs and job opportunities"?

erm, lets see 960 000 were lost during the recession (according to his speech!) and only 500 000 were created, now tell me is this like playing R100 in the lotto and winning R50?
