Is this correct?

The sales lady at Telkom basically 'hinted' I could take the Telkom Closer package for a month, get free installation of my ADSL line - then simply drop the Telkom Closer package next month.

Is there something she was not telling me?

Almost correct.

Doesn't cost you anything to install ADSL line. That is done at the exchange.

It does however cost you R543.00 to get the telephone line itself installed. Only after that you ask them to activate ADSL on the line.

And yes. If you take Closer 1 they will not charge you for the installation.

Sorry Merenwenrago, I didn't quite understand that? You are saying it was incorrect for me to take the Closer package to get the free telephone line installed???

The sales lady is correct. I got my new line into a brand new house installed free because I took the closer 2 package. Then when the line was installed I cancelled closer 2. I then got adsl line installed with the self install option also for free. Saved myself a grand in installation charges doing it that way. Only paid R30 extra for closer 2 package for first month.

Not sure what R700 deposit is for but thats how it works in pietermarizburg. The closer package doesnt take that deposit away ive tried it only takes installation cost away and wasnt even installing a new line in new place its just adding line to existing infrastructure.

The SMS says from Pretoria Head Office:
To enable us to proceed with installation a deposit of R700 is payable against acct no ***** , Pse dial 10219 with payment details. TELKOM

I had my line installed 6 months ago and never had to pay any deposit. Just went to the local telkom shop and filled in the forms and the lady made a photocopy of my ID and that was that. 20 minutes later my reference number was sms'ed to me. The first time I had to pay was after the first month the line was installed. First bill was for 2 months because you supposed to pay line rental upfront. Maybe it has changed since then or the people in pietermarizburg are dodge. :)

Just make sure it is Closer 2. You don't get the free telephone line installation with Closer 1 as I understand it.

i did choose closer package 2 and applied at telkom direct store and the person who helped me said theres no deposit charge then got this sms a month later and application got canceled for not paying R700. Not paying R700 since i dont have R700 spare :P and it shouldnt be charged.

Hi, I know this is already a reasonably old thread but I'd like to clarify something regarding the R700 deposit.
I spoke to a call center rep this morning after reading this thread in my own quest to save a bit of cash on the installation.

According to her; Before Telkom approves the line installation one gives them ones information which they need for a proactive credit check.
She sounded pretty certain of herself when I asked her to repeat and confirm that the deposit requirement is related to the outcome of the above mentioned credit check.

My immediate assumption is that if one does not have a credit record they will ask for a deposit. A person with a less than satisfactory credit record may be treated similarly or receive a declined line installation request.

Hope that helps.

PS: @Merenwenrago; Sounds like someone dropped the ball somewhere while dealing with your account, hope you tried your luck at social engineering and sorted that one out without paying.

Basically if you take a closer bundle, I think its bundle 2, you will get the analog line installation for free. Once the techy comes and installs the line, for free, call 10219 and cancel the closer bundle, hence leaving you with a analog line that didn't cost you anything to install. Then call 10219 and apply for an ADSL line on your new analog telephone line, make sure they understand you will do a self install, hence no installation charge. Net result is that you have ADSL line installed and you didn't pay any installation fees.

You will need to purchase your own ADSL modem, they start from around R250 going upwards, and you will also need to get your own ISP bandwidth, I recommend Afrihost for R29 per gig.

Just make sure it is Closer 2. You don't get the free telephone line installation with Closer 1 as I understand it.

An update - you do get it with Closer 1. I logged a call on their billing website and my payment was eventually refunded.

I'm gonna necro (won't make a habit of it, promise) - just want to find out if this is still valid? I haven't had to apply for a Telkom line in quite a while, but need to get a new line at my home. Would be cool to get rid of that installation fee, as I am working on quite a tight budget right now...

R700 deposit applies if you have no credit record, and also if you put the line in the name of a company or close corporation that has no credit record

Re-necroing this thread.

Has anyone actually got their R700 deposit back from telkom? Or am I basically never going to see it again?

Edit: Disregard that, I suck cocks.
Looks like they just deduct the deposit from your first couple of monthly payments.

People who don't have SA green ID books also have to pay the R700. I have a few foreign nationals at work who had to fork out the R700 to get a phone line and adsl at their homes
