Hi guys, I hope someone with some direct experience might be able to advise me on which ISP would meet my needs.

I need to support a large UK customer.

My main requirements are:
Google Talk
Skype
RDP & VNC (Especially the vnc protocol, it can become seriously unusable with bad latency)
VPN

I would also prefer my traffic unshaped and uncapped if possible. No real preference between signing up for either home or business accounts. I will be based in Roodepoort just outside Joburg if that helps.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

webafrica all the way. they arent really the cheapest, but by a long shot the most stable. even the shaped offering is sublime. take this from someone who is an avid gamer, and needs, no, rephrase that, DEMANDS the lowest possible ping to the EU. this is your best choice. however, they dont do uncapped. they do have 50gig packages though. worth a good look at

WebAfrica or Cybersmart have a look here if you are in Cape Town: http://stats.jinx.net.za/cinx/index.php and if you are in Joburg, here: http://stats.jinx.net.za/ - choose an ISP from these lists only and you should be safe...

Needless to say skip those ISP's with a horrid reputation, like IS (Afrihost, etc.) and MWEB or anyone purchasing bandwidth from them....

Vodacom (http://www.vodacombusiness.co.za/web/vodacombusiness/vb_business_adsl?URLId=100117) and MTN (http://www.mtnbusiness.co.za/SME/SM...ailSolutions/Pages/InternetEmailSoutions.aspx) delivers excellent throughput, at a cost though...

Thank you guys, that is very good info. WebAfrica does look real good and they did respond to my web request within minutes which is always a good sign.

If anyone else has any info please feel free to add to this.

Hello viisiix,

We have a server in the UK so I've tested with SAIX, MWeb, WebAfrica, Axxess and TelkomInternet. The best was WebAfrica and next was Axxess Unshaped (IS bandwidth). Hope this helps :)

Hi Viisiix,

I'm based in Cape Town and provides support to a UK based company, all day every day (via VPN). I extensively use RDP, SSH and VOIP and found Webafrica tops. I'm using one of their titan packages (which is shaped) and even so and have constant 180ms pings to the UK. Their network is rock solid. Occasionally (maybe few days a month) latency will drop a bit, but is still well within acceptable ranges. I used cybersmart for a while too, but found that their latency tends to drop a lot (down to the 500ms+ ranges) when things gets busy, so not good if you need to have absolutely lowest latency possible. I must say that was back in Jan/Feb this year when rumours were flying around of them having capacity issues, so I'm not sure if that has been sorted out.

Cybersmart's connectivity has improved, but does not rival WebAfrica's connectivity.

Again thanks for all the info provided it was very helpful.

I thought I'd bump this thread rather than start a new one, will I get better speeds if I get a new analogue line installed from Telkom or would I get the same speeds on an existing older line?

same, however should you be experiencing issues with your line log a fault, call 24 hours later and request Telkom to swap your exchange port...

ps which ISP did you settle on?

I sent out requests or had a look at all the ISPs mentioned in this thread(and then some) and decided to go with WebAfrica business.
