eish man.thats a tough one
it depends what apps you have on your phone
i dont know why but the developers of most of the android apps want full internet access .its ridiculous for apps that dont even need to connect to the net
anyways.i put my mobile data off when im not using it.else it just keeps downloading.
i used over 80mbs last month
i suggest dont get your desire yet coz i see all the newer contracts are coming with atleast 100mb data free.thats what you need
when i upgraded in august there were no bundles.i never knew how much it would use
so wait for the desire packages with data rather
else you gona have to buy a 150mb bundle everymonth to use your phone without worrying about your data getting used up

i just got my desire how painless was the up grade called in to a 4u store last one as the guy told me and at 5 i had my phone and on my way home 2.2 out the box .... i really dont want to brake my new baby so just charging it and will play in the morning ....

Switch of the GPS because that will easily chow a battery in a day and I also turn of the wifi and for most of the day while I dont need it I switch the data connection off. That means all the background apps that are eating your battery AND bandwidth while the phone is sitting in your pocket can do nothing, and that way I can often get 3 days on a battery.

I added 500Mb to my MTN contract for R189. Still not cheap but I now leave 3G on and don't bother with it much. I'm not a huge user but I use my currency converter daily, I like my weather forecasts and a bit of Twitter (ie Peep) while 3G Watchdog monitors my usage. I also have Sweetdreams, which basically switches off all but the very essentials at night when you're in bed and won't be using any online anyway. Nice app, but irritating if you're up late.

Steps to install Froyo on HTC Desire

Step 1: Download the Android 2.2 firmware for the Desire from here http://liveimage.htc.com/OTA_Bravo_Froyo_HTC_WWE_2.09.405.8-1.21.405.2_release4dua3bcrut4wrv30.zip
Step 2: Rename the file update.zip and copy it to your microSD card via USB. [Note: make sure the file is named update.zip and not update.zip.zip.]
Step 3: Power down your Desire.
Step 4: Hold down the “Volume Down” button as you power the phone back on.
Step 5: A screen should appear showing your phone’s system searching for various files. Scroll down to “recovery” and press the “Power” button.
Step 6: When you see the triangle with an exclamation point symbol, press the “Power” and “Volume Up” buttons at the same time.
Step 7: From the menu that appears, select “Apply sdcard:update.zip.”
Step 8: When the screen displays “Install from sdcard complete” select “reboot system now” and wait for the phone to power back up

All i can say is be patient, mine took a while on the 'HTC' screen, but it will eventually get past that!"

Guys, I tried these steps above but it seems like that update file might be buggered - perhaps on purpose by HTC to prevent these manual installs. I followed the steps exactly but when I get to the step where I do the update it says "failed to verify whole file signature. Signature verification failed. Installation aborted"

I made very sure that I downloaded the file exactly in the above link and have made NO changes to it. I also made sure that it's the whole file, it can open and is not corrupt. I even downloaded it twice over different connections and all gave the same error. Any ideas?

im going to do this too.i think its the best value for money bundle
and i think it lasts 2 months if you dont finsh it?

i dont think theres a problem with the installation
i think you can only do the upgrade if you a certain version of 2.1 on your phone already.if your current version is different then people seem to get errors

Hmm, thanks, ya you might be on to something here... any idea which version numbers to check for? Mine says Firmware version 2.1-update1 and software number 1.15.1104.14

unfortunately i didnt take note of the old firmware when i tried the update
i know the phone has to be debranded. i got mine from mtn and the update worked

I can't say about value for money but it's okay and manageable. These guys (MTN and Vodacom particularly) are so awash with money they've driven virtually all other sponsors out of sport. We're paying for it all.
I was told that carry over applies for two months but I've not had the benefit of confirmation that the data has been added. Another way in which these corporations fall down on basic customer service. I guess it's up to me to pick up the landline phone and ask (hello guys, where's the free number for subscribers?)
 
Addons to Roms

Just rooted, and flashed the leedroid rom. New to this.

I'm trying to flash the brut_maps_stockified addon, but I keep getting installation failed error.

Failure at line .....

Any ideas?
 
ok i got my desire a few days now only charged it twice and would like to know if any damage will come from charging with a N97 charger got two one for the office and home the plugs say the same thing on input but outputs look different
