OFFICIAL HTC Desire Thread

Ok. So finally I am on Froyo!! :) But what a mission. So below I will tell you how I got there just in case it might help someone else.

I got one of the Vodacom Desires very early on - I think in the first 2 weeks when they came out here. I don't know if it was branded or not but the software version was 1.15.1104.14. I never got any OTA updates and when I tried to install using the steps here I got a signature verification failed error.

As alt146 said, you have to update the software to a version 1.21 first and then can do the update from here (http://liveimage.htc.com/OTA_Bravo_F...crut4wrv30.zip). So I followed the link he suggested here and although this worked in the end there were a few problems along the way.

First I had several problems downloading the full package from the link provided. The ZIP file that I downloaded was corrupt so I downloaded the exe. That would timeout halfway and also not download properly, so eventually I found a torrent for the exe which downloaded easily. (checked that there was no viruses).

Then when I ran the exe with the phone plugged in with USB and properly recognized in Windows (all drivers working) it would get to a step in the update wizard where it gives a USB error and says that the phone is not connected to the USB (USB CONNECTION ERROR). At first I thought the thing was bricked because it just had an HTC logo on the screen and would not respond to any buttons, and Windows would not pick up the phone and that is why the wizard could not continue. So restarted windows, restarted the phone (by pulling out the battery! haha) and did the same thing again and again USB error. Then I noticed that Windows did not recognize the drivers of the phone after it's restart to bootrom mode. So I tried to fiddle with the drivers, and eventually uninstalled them through device manager and let windows search for new drivers. After they were installed it still did not pick up the phone but I saw that Windows wanted a restart for the drivers to work. So this time, without unplugging the phone or making any changes to the phone (still in the bootrom mode with the black screen and HTC logo) I just restarted windows. When it booted, it recognized the phone in its bootloader state and when I ran the exe updater again from the start everything went through fine.

After that I could do the Froyo update and that also worked with no problems. Yeehaw!

So that's my story - hope it helps someone else out there.
 
What's with the push messages I get from time to time? I don't understand these and wouldn't mind someone explaining. I think they're mostly spam and after the first, I now delete them. I also can't see any way to switch these off. Can you help?

Not really sure, I've only gotten one wierd one and I deleted it as soon as it arrived.*shrug*
 
Why are people still going through all the trouble to update their phones to Froyo? it took the LEAF rep in Cape Town 10 minutes to update my firmware.

Because the leaf reps/techs are totally useless and unhelpful so we had to resort to do it our selves. Trust me I tried it with them every possible way and all they ever said was "wait for the OTA update" which obviously would never come. Lucky you if you got one that helped you or got an OTA update, but that is out of the ordinary.

That is unfortunate.Although their poor service is notorious I actually phoned lab88 and the guy I was in contact with was extremely helpful.When he told me he would call me back the next day,he actually phoned me back.

But aneway for anyone in Cape Town who wants to upgrade to Froyo 2.2,you can go to MTN in canal walk.There are two MTN store's I think it's the one opposite Edgars.Go to the LEAF kiosk and the guy will know what to do.It should take like 10 minutes and you're good to go.It really is worth the upgrade:)

BTW it doesn't matter what network you're with.It's free of charge.

wow i wonder how u got 2.10............
where did you get your desire from?
did you root it?
 
I checked I can do the update I'm on 2.2 if its down grading then I'm not going to try it
