Hi all

A friend of a friend of a friend...etc. called me today asking about Linux qualifications.

Apparently he took some Linux courses at tech or something but wants a piece of paper that says he knows Linux. I'm not really sure how proficient he is. I know he doesn't run Linux at home but who knows.

Anyway he says he doesn't want to do a course he just wants to write the test. Anyone know where in Cape Town someone could do something like that and what sort of qualifications there are out there?

I use Linux almost exclusively but I have no formal qualifications in it and honestly have no desire to get any. My knowledge of the sort of qualifications people can get in Linux is nothing to write home about so I really would appreciate some advice here.

If this isn't the right forum for it I apologise and could a mod please move it to where it would be most appropriate.

You can write the Comptia exams at alot of companies. But you need some training and guidance - thats 10 % The other 90% you will need in practical know how and competance. Thats why im keen on going on like a 5-day course and getting a certificate of some sorts. Spending 6-8 months solely on acquiring a qualification is too long for me when I need to work at the same time. Personally I cant study part time. These exams are such bastards in that you need full focus and concentration.

The RHCE appears to hold a bit more water than the rest of the Linux certs, as far as I have seen.

Hi Porchrat

Im in the same boat. Well sortof - Check this:

Let us know how it goes or possibly if ther give your buddy a certificate of some sorts.

Not so sure how keen he is on networking specifically. I'm not even sure what slant he wants on the course. I don't really know if he knows. He is pretty fresh out of his college thing and I don't think he has much work experience to speak of. He is actually a son of a friend of my mother's and he has asked me for some advice. I'm not really equipped for it because my knowledge of Linux is pretty much self and community taught. I never received any formal qualification in Linux in particular.

Thank you all for the ideas. I'll research them further the moment my international internet returns (curse you mweb!)

I also don't know what sort of money he is prepared to spend.

From the brief conversation I had with him over the phone it sounded as though he wanted to just do something quick and cheap. I don't know if such a thing is even possible.

Thanks again for the input everyone. If anything else comes to you in the meantime feel free to add it to this thread guys. :)
