Symbian on its last legs?

under the circumstances is it advisable to wait for N8,i used nokia since 1997,it has never dissappointed me,what now,my upgrade is overdue

It was a good run for Symbian, and its sad that they are being pushed out the market by such heavy hitters, I mean, who the hell can complete with Google and Apple....

Well Symbian were top dog in the smartphone world for such a long time, I find it suprising that something like Android can totally wipe them out :/
 
I'm sick of Symbian. Its the only OS ive ever really used on my smartphones and I have come to hate it now. Gonna move to Android

Very late to the party? Symbian was the first through the door! How long did the iPhone take to copy and paste?

Still sad that it's happening though, I've been using symbian since my first phone, still love it.

They won't go down without a fight.
 
Well they're not dead yet - who knows what will happen with Symbian v4? They might turn it completely around, hugely improve the clunky user interface and it'll be awesome. Those that are dropping the OS now could easily pick it up again in the future. Look at Microsoft's Windows 7 mobile OS - manufacturers have dropped Windows Mobile ages ago, but I' sure that lots will pick it up again if it proves to be successful. Dropping an OS is not set in stone. So while things don't look great for Symbian at the moment, they still are the largest mobile OS and who knows what will happen if they take feedback from the current trends and develop accordingly?

Nokia dug their own grave with so many damn models all with different flavors of the OS. No chance of a major functional update every year like iphone, you're lucky to get a bug fix. With so many new models arriving all the time, you know the only way to improve your nokia is to buy a new one. Nokia deserve what is coming to them, a bunch of pissed off customers who shelled out large for a phone that got zero support!
 
Can't really blame SE for their decision - back in UIQ days SE made some very popular (smart) phones.
Maybe they can regain that position by using Android.
 
I loved symbian, had 5 of them over the years... from the 7610 to the N70 to the N95 8Gb(the best one) to the 5800 to the N97(rubbish for its price at the time). I then got a Google Nexus One, and the difference is shocking. You can hardly call symbian a modern OS anymore. I really loved it, but once you see what android can do, symbian feels ancient.
 
Some examples why android is ahead for me..

I currently have FULL ubuntu Lucid Lynx running inside a virtual machine inside the android os. It runs in the background, and the rest of android is smooth as butter. I switch to ubuntu with the touch of a homescreen icon and I have full firefox with all my extensions, synced to my pc, as well as GIMP if I need to touch up a photoshop file on the go(supports layers and everything!).

Gmote.. an app that lets me use the touch screen as a touchpad on my pc via wifi.

psx4droid is a Playstation One emulator.. Got Final Fantasy 7 running really nicely, excellent control system, just the music is choppy sometimes. Also got ridge racer running nicely. Pretty much most of the PSone games work, just haven't gotten to downloading more iso's and testing.
Got Quake 3 running nicely.

My remote desktop client lets me control any pc on my network from anywhere in the house.. and over the internet if i forward the ports etc. Over wifi its extremely smooth.
EsFile Explorer lets me browse my entire networks file structure really easily and copy file to the phone. No need for cables.

Youtube "google sky map".. people are always amazed when I show them that..

There are tons of other things, like how apps can integrate into the os so things they do are accessible from other places.. they become context sensitive, sorta like how on a pc when you install winzip/winrar, you can right-click anywhere in explorer and its integrated into the menu. An example would be OI file manager. Lets say I was in some app that lets me add clip art to my images. Normally it would ask you if you want to take a new photo, or select one from the gallery. With OI file manager installed, it comes up as an option in all apps. So if I select OI, I can browse system folders, even my network, to select a file to use in the app. So I can open an image on the PC straight from some random app i just downloaded on the phone.

I could go on... Can't wait for Android 3 - coming in December.. new sleek UI apparently :)

This I experienced first hand with my SonyEriccson P990i, where you would tap the screen, tap again....still nothing....tap again....arrggghh! Also saw my boss having the same problem with his Nokia N97, before he threw it against the wall. I did get a perverse sort of satisfaction and enjoyment out of it. :D

Touch screen OSes are the market today, so I can't see how Symbian will ultimately survive.

Funny enough my GFs brother did the same thing to his phone :D He just couldn't take it anymore.

I've been using android for a few months now and its by far the best experience I've ever had on a mobile phone. I just wanted a smart phone that was quick to respond, not having to wait 5 sec for the next screen to pop up unlike Symbian. Back in the day using a Nokia 6600 was awesome, but it really just doesn't feel like much has changed since then for Symbian OS, well thats my opinion.

Thank you for this post. It just proves why the Symbian OS and Nokia are loosing market share, rapidly.

They have failed to bring something useful and new to the table in a very long time. A couple of years ago I was very impressed with Nokia and the Symbian OS. The user experience on all Nokia devices was the same and you could pick up any Nokia phone and immediately know how it worked. So much for the past ...Sadly Nokia stayed with this strategy a bit too long.

I'm currently using the Blackberry Bold 9700 as my mobile device. I'm enjoying it, but looking forward to see what the new OS 6 has to offer.
