Totally agree with you. Having your personal information recorded on sheets of paper (as was the case when I RICA'd) doesn't inspire the greatest confidence. While Kaspersky is stating what we believe to be obvious perhaps the custodians of this data will take this information to heart.

Any process that involves the human element in the transaction is explotiable.
 
Not may be, it is...then again it's not like Vodacom is keeping all its contract users particulars safe anyways.
 
What exactly would said crim be able to do with my Rica details? Find out where I live and how much my last electricity bill was?
 
RICA is crap. It is a stupid idea and pointless of you think it through. I still haven't registered, but probably would have to before the end of the year...

Indentity theft requires the con-man to as convincing a possible. So in the case of opening an account without your 3 months of bank statements, it is possible. The con just needs to be as convincing as possible and with some valid-looking documents it does help his cause.

Proving that you are who you say are is simply a bluffing game, a matter of belief.
Which brings me to another pet peeve relating to personal identity, that instituions have an infaliable belief in grainy fax sent documents - but a high resolution scanned PDF is somehow less legit?

Another interesting thought is that now there has been a surge of spoofing caller ids, see yesterdays news.
Having someone's contact detail and just a little bit of information about them, you could wreck a fair amount of havoc in their life.

So now Vodacom will not only sell our phone numbers, but our ID and Addresses too , whoopy...corrupt south africa yay.

The risk is in identity theft. ID numbers, address, phone numbers are all in the files. In the wrong hands they can do more than check your electricity bill.

It's not everything they need, but a lot of these guys are smart enough to get what else they need and really start screwing people.
 
RICA and FICA are a complete joke and a waste of time... what scares me is that any fool with one IQ point of common sense can see that... so I am assuming the government knows that but is going ahead with the exercise anyway... because the ultimate point of RICA and FICA is something other than what they have told you and me. The question is... what are they going to do with that info.

If you have a landline then name, address and phone number is in the telephone book. Virtually any official communication, but also CV's and other documenation which is used in the sphere of private business, contains your ID number. Even if only the birth date is known it would be relatively easy to construct a valid ID number for a person as the the meaning of all the digits are known, including how the checksum is calculated.

IMO it is not the submission of the ID number which is a problem but that the number is based on physical parameters, except for the birth count on that day (your day of birth).
